'Cadian Blood' – Aaron Dembski-Bowden (Black Library)

Image
I'm ending this week in that familiar situation where I'm halfway through a couple of books and... that's it. I've read some good stuff, this week, but couldn't quite get all of it over the line. Oh well, the weekend is going to be all about reading (no, seriously...) and we'll see how we go next week instead. So, what's today going to be all about then? Well... When I was culling the teetering piles of books in my flat (and wow, I can see the floor again...) I found my copy of 'Cadian Blood' lurking under some comic books. I'd had a re-read, the other week, and then put it to one side, just in case I ever ran out of stuff to post about. Which seems to be the case today so... Lets go ;o) When the Imperial shrine world of Kathur is blighted by Chaos, the brave Guardsmen of Cadia are sent to reclaim it. The plague of Nurgle has set in deeply on the planet, forcing the Cadians into battle with an innumerable legion of the infected. In the midst of...

‘King Conan’ – Aaron, Asrar, Wilson (Marvel)

Image
I don’t think you’ll be too surprised to find out that this week hasn’t been a good week for reading. Hmmm… what gave it away? 😉 I’ve managed to read a few bits but not anywhere near as much as I would have liked (given the number of books that are still left over after the ‘Big Cull’ the other day). A whole load of stuff, that you probably won’t be that interested in, all combined to keep me away from getting any serious reading done. Oh well, I’ll keep on chipping away at the pile 😊 One of the books that I did manage to read though was ‘King Conan’, the first issue of which I read back in February and true to form, totally forgot to carry on reading. Oh well, that’s what the trades are for 😉 I picked a copy up last week but only got round to reading it this week. I don’t know how many more ‘Conan’ books we will see from Marvel, given that the licence is reverting, but if   ‘King Conan’ is the last book we see, it could well be just the book for Marvel to bow out on, given t...

‘Terrifier 2’ (2022)

Image
I’ve been on the fence about watching ‘Terrifier 2’ and mostly because of ‘Terrifier 1’, not a bad movie but light on plot and a film that absolutely turned my stomach. Seriously, that film was grim (in a good way but…) But anyway… The other reason that I’ve held off watching Terrifier 2’ was the run time of two hours and eighteen minutes. Anything over say an hour and forty minutes and my attention will wander so I won’t lie, that extra forty(ish) minutes did give me pause. And also, how much run time is needed for a story that’s essentially a clown killing people? (That ended up being a really silly question but more on that later…) Having said all of that though, of course I was always going to watch it, especially when I heard tales of people having adverse reactions at the screenings, I always take that kind of thing as a challenge to be honest 😉 So last night, I ordered some pizza in and got down to watching ‘Terrifier 2’… After being resurrected by a sinister entity, Art ...

‘The Stacks’ – Chris Winterton (Black Library)

Image
You know what I’m like, if there’s a bus ride to (or from) work then I’m usually reading some Warhammer Short fiction on my phone 😉 I’m not really up for anything too in depth (at least not on the morning commute, okay the evening rid home as well) so a short, sharp dose of Grimdark and/or horror is just the right length to hold my interest. Okay, and it gives me time to have a little snooze if I need it 😉 It looks like I’m finally getting caught up with the short reads as ‘The Stacks’ was part of this year’s Black Library ‘Horror Week’. After some early cases of ‘isn’t all 40K horror really…?’ I’m fully behind the line now and was keen to see what Chris Winterton (an author whom I hadn’t read until now) would bring to the table. And the answer was… The will of the Inquisition comes above all else… The Inquisition tasks an archivist to find a lost tome but can she retain her sanity as she executes her duty…? At only thirty one pages long, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the...

‘Trick ‘r Treat’ (2007)

Image
I haven’t been so good with this in recent years (Halloween being more about following my kids around the streets while they do Trick or Treat) but I do like to pop on a scary(ish) movie, on the day, and have a watch 😊 Not a lot of difference from most other days, I know, but… it’s Halloween 😉 ‘Trick ‘r Treat’ isn’t the scariest film ever but it’s an ‘anthology’ movie (and you know how I am with those) and I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for it anyway so I thought I’d make it the first of my ‘Halloween’ movies today. First? Yep, I’m planning on a couple more if I’m not on ‘Trick or Treat’ duty tonight. We’ll see how that pans out but in the meantime… Four separate tales regarding a secret serial killing high-school principal, a college girl virgin, a woman who hates Halloween as much as her husband loves it and a group of school kids who carry out a wickedly sadistic prank. As the night unfolds, danger descends, as unspeakable things roam free and the townsfolk must do all they can i...

Books for the TBR Pile... 'A Mighty Cull...' Edition

Image
Well, it's been coming for a while and yesterday , it finally happened. I love books and I love my books but I've been buying them far quicker than I can read them and my flat is tiny... Something had to give ;o) Over the last couple of days, I've taken a good hundred (or so) comic books and horror/fantasy/sci-fi books to the little 'Phone Box Library', on Lewisham Way, and left them there for anyone who happens to be passing. If you're in the area, there may be a few left... ;o) How does it feel? I'm feeling pretty good actually. There are still a lot of books in the flat but I'm feeling less and less like a hoarder and more like someone who has a few too many books, that can't be a bad thing :o) And some of those books were in pretty good shape (the comic books in particular) so it's nice to think that someone else will get some use out of them. I can't see myself doing it again for a while but I'd recommend having a little clean out ev...

‘Dominion’ – Darius Hinks (Black Library)

Image
My little journey to finally finish off that little pile of half finished books continues with ‘Dominion’, a book that should never have been on that pile for as long as it was. As much as I enjoyed ‘Dominion’ whenever I had the chance to pick it up, and I’ll tell you more about that in a second, several other things would inevitably combine to make sure that it would be a while before I got another chance to read. But, like a settler heading off into the wildlands (not a settler mauled to death by the fauna…), I got there in the end and it was a journey well worth taking. Let me tell you about it (quickly though, too much to do and not enough Graeme for it all…) In the rain-soaked shanty towns of Excelsis, sellsword Niksar Astaboras drunkenly barters his way to a meaningless existence. Little does he care for the war that rages between men and monsters beyond the city walls, despite portents of its encroaching threat. Mortal life in the Realm of Beasts is short enough, and to leave ...
