'The Hedge Knight' - G.R.R. Martin

I've done pretty well, blogging-wise, this week, but I've come to Friday and need to focus a little more on giving my daughters a decent day instead. Luckily, 'Past Me' loved blogging as much as I do now (okay, maybe a little bit more) and has come to the rescue again :o) With the first pictures from new TV show 'The Hedge Knight' doing the rounds, I thought it was a good time to bring this review out and let it have it's time again. It might even prompt me to (finally) read the other stories in this series. It's also another excuse to remind people that they really should have a copy of 'Legends' on their shelf if they don't already. It's a brilliant collection that is always good for a re-read ;o) Anyway... If you're after the original post, click Here . If not, feel free to keep reading ;o) What is a lowly squire to do when his hedge knight master falls ill in the middle of nowhere, knights him and then promptly dies? If you’re Dun...

‘The Ice Dragon’ – George R.R. Martin (Harper Voyager)

Page Count: 120 Pages I was in Wimbledon, for work, on Tuesday and as I normally do when I’m there, I spent my lunch break nipping in and out the charity shops, on the hunt for a bargain or two. There wasn’t an awful lot, this time round, to be honest but that’s the way the hunt can sometimes go. What there was though was an absolutely lovely looking copy of George R.R. Martin’s ‘The Ice Dragon’ and it was only £1.50 so of course I bought it ;o) I reckoned at least one of my daughters would like it but it had been a few years since I read it last (okay, seventeen years…) so that’s exactly what I did last night… Quick thoughts follow after the blurb (the book is only 120 pages long so quick thoughts are all I have). The ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate, frozen land. No man had ever tamed one. Adara first glimpsed the ice dragon as she played in the snow long after the other children had fled the cold. But Adara was not afr...

‘A Night at the Tarn House’ – George R.R. Martin (From ‘The Book of Magic Part II’)

The ‘Great Book Tidy Up’ continues at pace although I’m starting to suspect that all this will mean is that everything just goes under my bed which will be left teetering on top of a massive pile of books. I guess I’ll just have to learn to lie really still when I’m sleeping… 😉 As ever, my tidying up brings up books that I’d put to one side, meaning to read later, only to have them form the basis of brand new TBR piles that I keep meaning to get to and… you know the rest. I’d enjoyed Scott Lynch’s entry in ‘The Book of Magic’ and meant to check out a couple more stories that looked intriguing. Four (and a little bit) months later and I’ve finally got round to reading George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Night at the Tarn House’, a tale that originally appeared in the ‘Songs of the Dying Earth’ collection but can be found here as well. You can also read the story, in its entirety, over Here . The Tarn House; come for the hissing eels, stay for… Three travellers are about to find out that even i...
