'Slasher: Guilty Party' (2017)

Sorry for the sudden silence, on the blog, over the last couple of days... It was my eldest daughter's birthday and her birthday somehow managed to become an entire birthday weekend (we've all done it)... The upshot was that I didn't even have time to pick up a book, let alone get anything read ;o) I'll tell you what I did do though. When I finally made it home each night, I tried to catch up on some of the TV that I've been meaning to watch. And I did :o) Well, with one series anyway...

I don't have Netflix (and won't either) so my journey through the 'Slasher' series has been conducted completely out of order so far). You can read my thoughts on Season 4 ('Flesh and Blood') over Here and Season 1 ('The Executioner') over Here. Read them? Brilliant ;o) I enjoyed both seasons so much that I ended up going out and buying the box set and that has led me to Season 2, 'Guilty Party'. You're only getting quick thoughts on this season as I'm looking at another long day at work tomorrow (so need an earlyish night) but also, it's worth watching and I'm not going to give away too much on the offchance that you give it a go. Because I think you should :o)

In the dead of winter, a group of former summer camp counselors return to the resort where they participated in the murder of Talvinder Gil, then hid her body. But the body has vanished from its secret hiding spot and suddenly, they are being killed, one by one, by a mysterious figure in an orange parka. Can they solve the mystery before they are all killed? And as secrets slowly begin to come to light, does anyone on the resort deserve to make it out alive?

I always feel like a bit of a fraud saying that I was so invested in a show that I just binged on it until it was done. I mean, of course I did. I bought the show because I wanted to watch it and if I don't have to wait for next week's episode, I'm watching the whole lot in one go (parenting demands permitting, sometimes). 'Guilty Party' though... Yes I bought the box set but also, I absolutely binged the hell out of 'Guilty Party' until there was nothing left to watch. It was that good.

I love a show that is so confident in itself, and how it tells it's story, that it has no problems leaving all the answers in plain sight as it knows that you won't be able to see the wood for all the trees. And that is exactly what 'Guilty Party' does, teasing you with it and leaving you no option but to go looking for the answer and hoping that no-one else does in the meantime. And that's another thing, some of the character work is superbly done with 'counselor killers' trying to do the right thing while the people running the retreat aren't as selfless as they appear. There's all sorts to root for here, whether you think that someone has done enough to warrant a second chance or if they're beyond all hope and you want them offed by the killer. Oh yes, and the one poor innocent who is stuck in the middle of this and you can't help but want them to get through in one piece.. And all the while, you're being teased that the answer is in plain sight... It's all heady stuff and when it finally clicks, it's like a light bulb going off in your head and it's like the whole show suddenly takes on a new meaning. It's brilliant.

And all the while, the killer is stalking the resort, and surrounding forests etc, doing what this show does best, killing characters in the most inventive of ways. I loved what was a good mixture of subtle and pretty unsubtle deaths over the course of the eight episode run. Some of them need a strong stomach to watch though...

A very intriguing mystery and a bucket load of grisly death make up what was pretty much compulsive viewing and a more than solid follow up to 'The Executioner'. I won't leave it so long before watching Season 3 ('Solstice').

  1. I was looking around and it appears that only shudder has all 5 seasons. Other places just have bits and bobs. I'd say you made the right choice in going with the boxset of discs...
