'Slasher: Flesh and Blood'

Shudder and Youtube seem to have this agreement between them whereby Youtube bombards me with adverts, for stuff on Shudder, until I just give up and say, 'You know what? I'll just watch the damn show...' To be fair, it usually works out pretty well so I shouldn't complain.

The last few weeks, I haven't been able to turn round on Youtube without tripping over an advert for 'Slasher: Flesh and Blood' and in the end, I thought I may as well give it a go, just to see who won the competition the old man kept going on about... And it was brilliant, to the point where I've just spent the last week waiting for the final episodes so I could see if all my theories were correct. Let me tell you all about it.

The Galloway family have returned to their island home where Spencer Galloway is about to revive the old tradition of a particularly brutal family competition. The stakes are higher than ever this time though; this time round, the family are playing for nothing less than the entire Galloway fortune. Members of this dysfunctional family will stop at nothing to win but a new player has entered the game; a masked killer stalking the island and ready to kill in any number of ways... Will anyone be left to claim the Galloway fortune after the game is done?

I really wasn't expecting to enjoy 'Slasher: Flesh and Blood' as much as I did but damn... I was late to the show so tore through the first five episodes in an evening and then spent the last week waiting very impatiently for the final three. It was worth the wait, if you're fan of 'slasher' films then you absolutely give this series a go; it's all on Shudder now so get the free 'trial week' and get stuck in. Seriously.

Having a 'last person standing' competition would be fine on it's own, especially when you see some of what Spencer Galloway has in store (some of it was enough to make me curl up just watching it). Add 'the Gentleman' to the mix though and all of a sudden, you have a story where everything suddenly takes on new significance and the family secrets just come pouring out as everyone is trying to guess who the killer is. The Galloway family are pretty unlikeable anyway but that gets ramped up to a whole new level as we find out that everyone has something to hide and it all somehow ties into what is happening with the game and the Gentleman. Florence, in particular, is absolutely vile (although to be fair, there's not an awful lot in it, everyone will have acharacter that they love to hate) and that somehow makes it all the more watchable, especially when the Gentleman starts picking everyone off.

The mystery around the Gentleman isn't too hard to solve but that's missing the whole point which is basically watching the creative kills and wincing, lots. 'Slasher' was always going to be heavy on the gore (the clue is in the name) but what they come up with here is just wonderful, if you know what I mean ;o) Every kill is different but the gore remains the constant throughout and that's the way it should be. Quick CW though, the teenage girl dies pretty messily; just so you know.

So, a group of reprehensible human beings are slowly picked off by a masked killer with secrets of their own. What's not to like? If you're like me and enjoy a good mix of mystery and unrelenting gore, 'Slasher: Flesh and Blood' is the series that you need to watch. And it's all on Shudder now so you don't have to wait to see how it ends.
