'Doctor Who: The Visitation' (1982)

Image
My weekend reading went particularly well and I've got a nice little stack of books to post about this week. I know, right? That doesn't normally happen does it... Having said that though, today is my first day back at work, after leave, and I know it's going to be a tough one so... No books today I'm afraid, I thought I'd go easy on myself last night and watch a little 'Doctor Who' instead. I may be the only person who isn't getting their 'Doctor Who' fix off Britbox these days but there's still a lot to be said (by me anyway) for a speculative visit to CEX that turns up a few 'Doctor Who' DVDs that I don't have, there are loads by the way but that's the joy of it. Yesterday, I popped in and came out with three DVDs, one of which was 'The Visitation'. Now the last time I watched this, I was six and vague memories of melting aliens were all I really had of this one. Until last night that is. Let me tell you all about...

Books for the TBR Pile 'Great Haul!' Edition...

My girls are on holiday, with their Mum, and so I thought that yesterday would be a good day to do what I do best... Hunt for books of course ;o)  When you're looking for secondhand books, the best thing to do is not to go back and revisit the same old places too often, let the stock build up again and go back in a few months. Works every time ;o) I did that with a couple of bookshops yesterday and came back with some gems. Fancy a look? Of course you do... Ever since I've been reading Guy N. Smith's books, especially the 'giant creature' books, I've been on the lookout for more of the same. I paid a visit to 'Faction Books' yesterday (which is very much open, no matter what Google might say) and found these two books waiting for me. If it has pincers and a stinger on the cover, I'm reading it (and I've already finished 'Scorpion', review to come this week). I've got a real weakness for novelisations (film or TV) and although I manage...

Movie Night! 'Prey' and, erm... 'Mortal Kombat'

Image
After a week with my kids, they've gone off on holiday for a fortnight which has left me at a bit of a loose end... Of course it hasn't ;o) Last night and today have been all about book hunting and watching a couple of movies that I've been meaning to get round to. The title of the post gives it away a bit, okay a lot. I'll tell you about the books tomorrow but for now, here's what I've been watching... 'Prey' (2022) A skilled Comanche warrior protects her tribe from a highly evolved alien predator that hunts humans for sport, fighting against wilderness, dangerous colonisers and this mysterious creature to keep her people safe. I don't often have 'must watch' films that I can't wait to see (books are a very different matter but it's not like you didn't know that already...) but ever since I first saw the trailer for 'Prey', I've been getting pretty excited about it. Well, I watched it last night and I can safely t...

A Little 'Sock Monkey'...

Image
I had to take my youngest daughter to get a tooth filled, the other day, and it just so happens that Crofton Books is a few doors down so I thought I'd sweeten the deal with a couple of books for her. It half worked, I find myself owing her ten pounds as well as the books, not sure what happened there. But anyway... It wasn't just the littl'un who did well book-wise though, I saw a couple of 'Sock Monkey' books (as well as an original copy of the 'Dreaming City' graphic novel, that's another story though)and after having enjoyed the last one so much , I grabbed them before anyone else realised that they were there. I mean, at the time it was just me and my daughters in the shop but you know what I mean... Which kind of leads me to this post, another short one purely because I'm spending the day with my daughters and I really should get some sleep before that happens ;o) The books I found were... 'Sock Monkey: A Children's Book' Tells...

A Couple of 'Age of Sigmar' Quick Reads...

Image
This week's reading is actually going far better than it has any right to but today, I'm taking you back to roughly a week ago where I popped a couple of 'Age of Sigmar' short stories onto the Kindle App and decided to brave the commute to work. They're the ideal 'commute read', short enough to finish over a round trip (or less) and filled with enough swords and bloodshed that there's no danger of me falling asleep and missing my stop. Another short post today because I'll be honest, I need all the brainpower I can muster in order to work out how to keep the kids occupied today. There are only so many second hand bookshops I can take them round before the youngest one hulks out on me. In the meantime... 'The Road of Blades' – Josh Reynolds Those who tread the Road of Blades do so seeking glory in the eyes of the Dark Gods, or so Ahazian Kel believes. He is the last of his tribe, a Deathbringer, a fearless warrior whose path leads him to th...

Utterly Ridiculous Reading Plans For This Week...

Image
I'm one day in and it's already becoming clear that this won't be one of those holiday weeks where loads of reading gets done; not until the girls go off on holiday with their Mum anyway. The thing is though, having a reading plan worked so well last time that I really want to do it again and see what happens, even though I know that will be 'no books being read because I was trying to stop my kids from killing each other. In the spirit of hopeless optimism then... Lets take a look at what I'll be reading this week, given half a chance... A nice easy one to kick things off as I'm actually in and out of both of these books as we speak ;o) A couple of days ago, I'd have said I'd finish 'Dominion' first but then I had a little brain snap and it's full steam ahead with 'Stormbringer!' I really need to finish this 'Elric Re-Read'... Nothing against 'The Hangman Feeds The Jackal' (which is looking very good so far) but the ...

Books for the TBR Pile... 'Sorry About The Blog Silence...' Edition

Image
Like the title says... Sorry about that! Work went a bit mad on Friday (well, more like batshit crazy...), so much so that I ended up having to dedicate a small chunk of weekend to tying up all the loose ends. When I wasn't doing that, I was either painting 'Age of Sigmar' figures with my youngest daughter or sitting in the pub, waiting for her mate's birthday party to finish up... Which wasn't bad actually (the painting and the pub, not the birthday party...) And I'll be honest with you, I've got a week off with my daughters, this week, so I really wouldn't expect too many book reviews, maybe one if you're lucky. We'll see ;o) In the meantime then, and while I try and figure out if I can balance blogging with summer holiday stuff, lets take a look at some of the books that came home with me this week. There are no Guy N. Smith books this time round but there are still other cool books to take a look at, let me show you... I found these in the Gr...
