Movie Night! 'Prey' and, erm... 'Mortal Kombat'

After a week with my kids, they've gone off on holiday for a fortnight which has left me at a bit of a loose end... Of course it hasn't ;o) Last night and today have been all about book hunting and watching a couple of movies that I've been meaning to get round to. The title of the post gives it away a bit, okay a lot. I'll tell you about the books tomorrow but for now, here's what I've been watching...

'Prey' (2022)

A skilled Comanche warrior protects her tribe from a highly evolved alien predator that hunts humans for sport, fighting against wilderness, dangerous colonisers and this mysterious creature to keep her people safe.

I don't often have 'must watch' films that I can't wait to see (books are a very different matter but it's not like you didn't know that already...) but ever since I first saw the trailer for 'Prey', I've been getting pretty excited about it. Well, I watched it last night and I can safely that 'Prey' lived up to all my expectations. If you get a chance, watch it, it's amazing and a big old signpost for the direction that the 'Predator' franchise needs to take, in the future, if it wants to keep being a franchise.

'Prey' is beautifully shot and beautifully told, really drawing on the creeping fear of the first 'Predator' to give us a movie that unsettles and then explodes into well choreographed action that has plenty of blood and guts (it is a 'Predator' movie after all). That's all I want really and 'Prey' absolutely delivers. If we could have a few more 'historical Predator' movies like this, I'll be very happy.

'Mortal Kombat' (2021)

MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes on a journey that will end at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm. Here, Cole will stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the champions of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe...

Well, I don't know why I thought that was a good idea (actually, it was the Youtube clip of Jax versus Sub-Zero, it looked cool at the time). The fight scenes were smoothly done but there's only so much mileage that you can get out of a 'beat em' up' video game and it really showed here with a plot that was threadbare. Still, at least 2 Unlimited weren't involved in the soundtrack so that's something ;o)
