‘The Moon Mines of Sciara Lone’ – Danie Ware (Black Library)

Image
Another short, sharp dose of Warhammer fiction for you while I try to catch up with work after being on leave (and while I wait to get home and watch ‘Ms Marvel’, I wish I’d watched that last night, instead of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ but anyway…) I’m really enjoying my ‘Warhammer’ fiction, at the moment, but was aware that my 40K reading was starting to lag a little and my ‘Adeptus Sororitas’ reading was practically non-existent. Time to kill two birds with one stone then and read ‘The Moon Mines of Sciara Lone’… When Sister Augusta and her squad crash land upon an Imperial mining planet, they soon realise not all is as it seems – and a dark enemy lurks deep within the tunnels. Before I get to the story itself, it’s worth pointing out that a preview of Guy Haley’s ‘Avenging Son’ takes up just under half the space in this short eBook. That doesn’t affect the quality of ‘Moon Mines’ at all (more on that in a second) but you’re not getting the length of story that you think you’re getting. I...

'Obi-Wan Kenobi' – Episode Four.

Image
It has been a pretty heavy day but I finally found a little time to sit down and get caught up with 'Obi-Wan Kenobi', on time for a change ;o) We're just over the half way mark now (I think) and while the show has been pretty good overall, I did have a few doubts about last week's episode so was interested to see which way Episode Four would take us. As it turned out... I'll tell you in a minute ;o) Before I do though, here's the regular bit where I say that I'm not going to do a big recap of the plot, that's all taken care of by Tor . I may (and by may, I mean 'probably') get a bit spoilery though, just so you know. If you're still here, lets have a quick chat about 'Episode Four'. A 'quick' chat because while what it does isn't bad, there isn't that much of it... Leia is locked up in the Inquisitorial lair and it's on Ben and Tala to get her out. That's it, that's the whole episode. The outcome is neve...

'The Low Road' – Evan Dicken (Black Library)

Today is the big meeting at work (and I'm running it, we who are about to die etc...) so just a short post from me this time round, at least until I get a chance to watch ‘Kenobi’ later on this evening. Luckily for me then, last night’s read was a short one; it’s almost like ‘past me’ was thinking about today and thought that he’d do ‘present me’ a favour. Good work ‘past me’, good work… 😉 I’m a fan of Evan Dicken’s work (read my reviews on ‘The Path to Glory’ , ‘The Red Hours’ and ‘Fangs of theRustwood’ ) so when I saw ‘The Low Road’, it didn’t take much for me to pick it up and give it a go. And I’m glad that I did… Can a lone Branchwych warn her allies of impending attack? After her home is destroyed, a Sylvaneth Branchwych must travel through the creeping mire to warn her Glade of an imminent Kruleboyz invasion... ‘Kruleboyz’ are Orcs by the way. Sorry, Orruks … But you knew that already 😉 I’ve had a lot of luck with Dicken’s short fiction and ‘The Low Road’ proved...

Trailer! 'Prey'

Image
It's a controversial theory but I believe that there is no such thing as a bad 'Predator' film so I am all over this when August comes round... If you're in the US, look out for 'Prey' on Hulu but it looks like Disney has it everywhere else so my Disney+ subscription is staying right where it is, for a little longer at least ;o)

'The Bookkeeper's Skull' – Justin D. Hill (Black Library)

Prior to last week's annual leave stint, everything was starting to pile up and I'm not going to lie, I was starting to struggle a little bit. My kids totally ran me ragged last week but I'm feeling a lot better now though ;o) There was a slight silver lining in that while I was reading a little, I couldn't quite get reviews written which meant that a nice pile of books built up for times when I was able to write something but didn't have the time to finish anything first. Times like right now when I'm back at work and fighting to quell a rebellious inbox... ;o) Today's dip into, what I'm calling, 'The Insurance Pile' turned up 'The Bookkeeper's Skull', another slice of horror from a setting that is full of the stuff. When it's written like this though, I'm more than happy to take whatever comes my way... On the captital world of Potence, young enforcer cadet Rudgard Howe is caught up in a bitter internecine feud to inherit ...

'Obi-Wan Kenobi' – Episode Three

Image
I'm not sure what happened last week but I somehow managed to miss Episode Three and... Ok, I know exactly what happened ;o) The kids ran me ragged and I totally forgot it was on, probably chose to crawl into bed and sleep instead...And then I just completely forgot it had been on until I saw Facebook friends talking about it. I got there in the end though, it's a few days after everyone else but I watched it last night and I'm all caught up ;o) And now I get to tell you what I thought of it all... Two quick bits before I do though. Today is the first day back at work after a week off and I'll have my work cut out trying to get all caught up. This will be a short post then, sorry about that ;o) And as is the case with posts of this nature, I won't be recapping the plot... But you already knew that, didn't you? Either way, Tor.com have you covered if you haven't already seen Episode Three and want to find out what happened. And if you're still here, let...

'The Black Veldt' – Michael Reyes

Image
It's a fact that in the days immediately following payday, I'm more open to trying something new than I am at any other time. I clearly can't be trusted with money but the upside is that I do end up discovering some amazing reads quite by accident. Books like 'The Black Veldt' for example (I got tagged in a Tweet, thought the book looked interesting and never looked back). I've kind of given the game away early so if you want to duck out here then that's fine; just make sure you grab a copy of 'The Black Veldt' on the way, you really do need to read it. And if you're still here, let me tell you a little more about 'The Black Veldt'... Jose Carvel is a scumbag. But he wants to be a better person. The degenerate writer and former ward of state is trying to recreate himself in the slums of the Lower East Side, yet his past won’t stop haunting him. Those violent memories of his dark nights on the road. The tormented faces of those he left ...
