'Obi-Wan Kenobi' – Episode Three
I'm not sure what happened last week but I somehow managed to miss Episode Three and... Ok, I know exactly what happened ;o) The kids ran me ragged and I totally forgot it was on, probably chose to crawl into bed and sleep instead...And then I just completely forgot it had been on until I saw Facebook friends talking about it. I got there in the end though, it's a few days after everyone else but I watched it last night and I'm all caught up ;o) And now I get to tell you what I thought of it all...
Two quick bits before I do though. Today is the first day back at work after a week off and I'll have my work cut out trying to get all caught up. This will be a short post then, sorry about that ;o) And as is the case with posts of this nature, I won't be recapping the plot... But you already knew that, didn't you? Either way, Tor.com have you covered if you haven't already seen Episode Three and want to find out what happened. And if you're still here, lets go...
From where I was sat, Episode Three could be divided into two parts; Ben and Leia on the run and the first big face-off with Vader. One bit absolutely worked for me while the other... it didn't work at all for me. Don't worry, I won't make you guess which one was which ;o)
Ben and Leia, Ben and Leia... On the one hand, we've got a Jedi who has spent years being the Galactic 'Hide and Seek' Champion but is now fumbling his story at the first sign of a storm trooper or two. I was half expecting him to do some Jedi mind tricks, and save the day, but he was left relying on Leia to save the day. And Leia... I get how they're showing us that Leia was headstrong as a kid but what is behind her thinking that she has the slightest idea what she is doing on a planet that she didn't know existed before she landed on? There's being a bit headstrong and there's being completely thoughtless, especially given what she has already faced... You can tell then that a lot of the Ben/Leia stuff didn't work for me so well this time round ;o) It wasn't that bad to be fair, I did like a lot of the subtler stuff around Leia knowing there's more to Ben and Ben not being able to open up. On the whole though, it was only the consequences of the 'world's worst pair at being on the run' that kept things sweet for me, gunfights with storm troopers are never a bad thing.
Things got about a hundred times better when Vader and the Inquisition finally made planet fall. I guess that once Vader was aware of Ben's presence, the story couldn't keep the two apart from one another; it was a good move to just go with it and let things happen. Not only do we get some great fights (and Vader's idea of revenge is just chilling) but these moments really show us where Vader and Ben are in their respective journeys. Vader is definitely in the ascendancy (being literally driven by rage) while Ben is having to face up to the fact that the years have not been kind to him and he just can't face Vader as an equal anymore. Not only is that a big deal for the rest of this series (we know Ben has to survive but there's at least one more big fight coming and it will be a good one...) but it's setting up that last fight in 'A New Hope' and that's something I can get behind.
I'm really hoping that Vader doesn't take too much time away from Reva though. I mean, Vader will always be a big deal whenever he shows up but I'm starting to really think that Reva's tale will be the more interesting one just because of how much she is prepared to put on the line to get where she needs to be. Reva really goes for it here and if Vader backed off for an episode, I wouldn't mind too much.
A tale of two halves then and I'm definitely hoping for something more even on Wednesday. When it's on song though, Episode Three is really good and more of that in Episode Four will be welcome here ;o)
