'The Purge: Anarchy' (2014)

Only I could be told to work from home and start it off with a days annual leave... ;o) Sometimes, things just click in the best way although my day off has involved waving goodbye to a sobbing eldest daughter as she went off for her school trip (ok, maybe not the best day off then). After that though, things picked up (well, for me anyway, I hope she's having a good time now...) as I got to chill out, read a bit and watch 'The Purge: Anarchy'. It feels like ages ago that I posted about 'The Purge', a film that I'd always meant to watch but (as is always the way with me) never seemed to get round to. I've just had a little look back through the blog and November counts as 'ages ago', doesn't it? I think it does, or should do anyway. I really enjoyed 'The Purge' and told myself that I'd have to watch the other two films as well. Well, it's a little late in coming (which shouldn't surprise you) but here's the next...

Books for the TBR Pile - 'Now that's more like it' edition

Morning all, I hope you're ok and that this weird new world we're starting to find ourselves in isn't getting you down too much, or leaving you in bed wondering if you're just ill or... ill . It's shit though, isn't it? Just when you get your head round the fact that the world is slowly being destroyed by at least one floppy haired moron (maybe two, I suspect that Boris Johnson is still to really get going) then along comes the coronavirus. I'm not going to say loads here, because everyone else is already saying it. Just be kind to people and wash your hands before, being kind, and afterwards ;o) Enough of that for now though, lets have a look at some books :o) This week was definitely better than the last for buying books, mostly because Amazon threw some bargains my way but also because random charity shop visits really paid off. Here, I'll show you... The 'Complete Nemesis' was an Amazon find and a replacement for my old copy which s...

'Doctor Who: Day of the Daleks' (1972)

Saturday has crept up on us once again and... thank goodness for that is all I can say. The world is still in just as bad a shape as it was yesterday but it's Saturday so, erm... at least we're not at work now? Yeah, I know I'm reaching now so I'd best just get on with today's slice of Doctor Who. When I was a kid (and for a large chunk of when I wasn't) a favourite comfort read of mine was the 'Dalek Omnibus', a collection of three novelisations of Dalek stories from the TV show; these were 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth', 'Planet of the Daleks' and 'Day of the Daleks'. I absolutely adored that book, and it was a real shame to see it go, but it struck me (the other day) that I'd never actually seen any of the stories that the novelisations covered. Ok, I've seen the film of 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' but I'm not counting it, even though I do like Peter Cushing's Doctor. 'I need to do someth...

'The Goon Noir' – Various (Dark Horse)

After a pretty low point in my life, where I had to sell a whole load of my stuff just to keep going, I've spent the last couple of years slowly building it all back up again. This time, the plan is not to end up having to sell any of it! :o) One of the things that went was my collection of 'Goon' comic books, a collection that really meant a lot to me (you'll understand if you've ever read any of the books) and one that I was keen to build back up again once I could afford it. As it stands, I'm maybe two books away from having my collection back in one piece again. 'The Goon Noir' was never part of that original collection (it just never seemed to be on the shelves whenever I was in town) but when I saw it going very cheap on eBay... I had to have some of that action, of course I did. So my 'Goon' collection is up another book. I read it years ago (thanks to my local library) and really enjoyed it back in the day. Lets see what the ye...

‘First Episodes, Can’t Believe They Cancelled It’… ‘Brain Dead’ (2016)

Image
So, even when I find something that I really enjoy, Amazon Prime finds a way to mess with me. A quick look at Wikipedia told me that ‘Brain Dead’ was cancelled after just one season, I wish I’d seen this before really getting into the first three episodes… Dammit. I’m going to post about it anyway. Amazon are touting it as an Amazon Prime exclusive so I thought I’d give ‘Brain Dead’ a shot after wasting a large chunk of yesterday evening looking for a half decent monster/zombie movie to watch. Apparently, there’s no such thing as a half decent monster/zombie movie to watch on Amazon Prime. My search continues… So ‘Brain Dead’ it was then and I blew through the first three episodes before I knew where I was. I’m going to finish the series as I’m pretty confident that the rest of the episodes will be as good, even though there won’t be any more after that. This had better not end on a big cliffhanger… A US government employee discovers that the cause of the tensions between...

'The Wolf of Oren-Yaro' – K.S. Villoso (Orbit)

Now here's a book that I've been keeping an eye open for. I have a real weak spot for a combination of eye catching cover and gripping blurb, a combination that this book has delivered. And it's fantasy, my 'go to' readng of choice. I've been after something a little new and 'The Wolf of Oren-Yaro' looked like it could deliver on that front as well. Of course, being me, I promptly went and missed the publication date but that's me these days :o) I got there in the end though and have been reading this book on and off for the last couple of weeks. I finished 'The Wolf of Oren-Yaro' yesterday and while it took a little while for me to really get into the 'groove' of the book (more on that further down the page), I am so glad I stuck with it, The book really is that good once it gets going, or maybe once I got going with it. Either way, I think you should read it if you haven't already (and you probably have, I'm always the...

A Cover Art Post... 'Empire of Grass' (Tad Williams)

Image
Because it struck me yesterday that I'm never going to catch up with everyone else reading all the latest stuff. Yeah, I am a bit jealous but I just can't read that quickly anymore (especially when I spent what felt like most of yesterday evening trying to get my youngest daughter to go to sleep...) so my slightly later than normal New Year's Resolution is not to feel bad about it and just post about whatever makes me happy as far as books and TV go :o) Just remind me I said that the next time I get all annoyed at myself for reading slowly... ;o) So, I'm clearly still working my way through 'The Wolf of Oren-Yaro' and 'The Prefectly Fine House' then... What do you get in the meantime? How about some really lovely looking cover art for a book that's been out a little while and will be read after I finish up the books I'm reading at the moment... The kingdoms of Osten Ard have been at peace for decades, but now, the threat of a new war gro...
