What I Watched Over The Weekend.

Well... By weekend, I mean just the Saturday; Sunday was all about work with a little bit of PS4 and book shopping on the side (I totally got the proportions wrong there) But anyway... I've gone into the last few weekends with plans to catch up on my reading, only to end up sat in my favourite chair, watching whatever any one of several watchlists can throw my way. And this Saturday just gone saw me end up watching...

'They Nest' (2000)

A Maine Island becomes infested with lethal insects that nest inside their victims while a local doctor battles not only the bugs but also islanders who are out to serve their own brand of justice... on him.

Having read 'The Nest' (Review Here), I was after a little 'cockroach horror' and I came across this movie on Prime. I'll be honest, it had the look of a 'TV Movie' about it so I wasn't expecting an awful lot but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Surprisingly creepy and with enough of a sub-plot, about the islanders, to distract you from the fact that even a half decent 'bug horror' film can only get so much mileage out of a handful of cockroaches if you're not going down the 'gore route'. And talking of which...

'The Nest' (1987)

A biological experiment goes haywire when meat eating mutant cockroaches invade an island community, terrorizing a peaceful New England fishing villages and hideously butchering its citizens.

This was the movie I was looking for after I'd finished reading 'The Nest', a loose adaptation of the book but still a lot of fun to watch, especially when you see the cockroaches take an evolutionary step that wasn't even mentioned in the book. You can find the whole movie on Youtube, definitely give it a watch if you get a chance.

'The Wrath of Becky' (2023)

Two years after escaping a violent attack, Becky now seeks revenge on the men who stole her dog and killed her friend. Men who are part of a terrorist cell poised to commit insurrection. They don't stand a chance...

I didn't even realise this movie was a thing until I was browsing through Prime the other day; I enjoyed 'Becky' so had to give the sequel a go and... I'll be honest, 'The Wrath of Becky' is pretty much the same deal as 'Becky' so how you get along with this will ultimately depend on how you got on with the first movie. Personally, I enjoyed it. 'Wrath' may not do anything new but it does what it does very well and that was all I was after really, a mad revenge movie with at least one person's head exploding ;o) I got what I was after so I'm happy.

'Late Night With The Devil' (2023)

A late night talk show host stakes his show's future on one guest, a girl possessed by a demon...

I've been waiting to see this for what feels like far too long and the good news was that it lived up to the hype in my head. A movie that gets demonstrably more creepy as it goes on and an ending that casts David Dastmalchian's Jack Delroy in a whole new light. Yeah,,, you could see the finale coming but the pyrotechnics and slightly vague ending (I should say, thoughtful) more than made up for it, at least from where I was sat. Another one that's definitely worth seeking out.

And that's your lot, at least until next weekend when I promise myself that I'll read something and watch a whole load of TV instead ;o) What are you watching right now?

    I've been watching folk horror movies recently. Midsommar: A little too long but brilliantly done. Men: Beautifully shot but the ending lost me. Lord of Misrule: Plenty of folk horror tropes but they're all done so well. Great cast and haunting atmosphere. I also watched Late Night with the Devil and really liked it.

      I really want to watch Midsommar but I saw a particular clip on Youtube (what happened to the guy who went off the cliff) and it turns out that I'm really squeamish about broken bones going through skin... I haven't dared watch the rest, one day I will. I will have to check out Men and Lord of Misrule though.
      I'm always wary of hyping things up too much in my head but Late Night with the Devil was very good :o)

‘Worms of the Earth’ – Robert E. Howard.

Page Count: 27 Pages I have a copy of this on my shelf and the plan was to pick it up for a read on the way into work this morning. Well, that was the plan but I was half asleep, leaving the house, and totally forgot… No matter though, that’s what the Kindle app is for (although if I’d been a little more awake, I’d have read it off Project Gutenberg instead, you can find ‘Worms of the Earth’ Here ). 99p later and my ‘commute reading’ was secured 😉 I always seem to fall into the trap of just reading ‘Conan’ stuff whenever I fancy reading a little Howard. ‘Day of Ascension’ – Adrian Tchaikovsky (Black Library)

Page Count – 196 Pages There isn’t a lot that’s good about moving house (especially when it slowly dawns on you just how much the new place is going to cost to run, I need to get another job…) but there are some good bits if you look for them. For me, it was mostly around getting all my books unpacked and back on shelves around me again, not stuffed up in the loft where I couldn’t see them. Old favourites were back within easy reach, along with a whole load of new books that I really should have read ages ago. You can probably guess what my main New Year’s resolution will be… ;o) ‘Day of Ascension’ was one of those new books and I figured it was as good a place as any to start over in making a dent in the ol’ TBR Pile.
