'Slasher: Solstice' (2019)
Well, this week hasn't been the best for finishing books (although I am reading 'Clickers Never Die' and it is bloody brilliant, more on that another time though...) but I haven't done too badly as far as finishing TV shows goes. Look, in an ideal world I'd be making a dent in the TBR pile but this is not an ideal world, not this week, so I'll take what I can get in the meantime... ;o)
I've
finally finished 'Slasher: Guilty Party' and
'Moon Knight' as well. Now,
I've finally watched every season of 'Slasher', with 'Solstice' finally in the
bag :o) I'm notoriously late to these shows so I'm fairly certain that you've
probably seen 'Slasher' already but if you haven't then you really should (I'm
not going to go into the whys, you can just read my 'Slasher' posts over Here). And with that said,
lets take a look at 'Slasher: Solstice'...
Kit Jennings, a sex and drug
addict, is murdered by someone using a "Druid" costume in
front of an apartment complex during the summer solstice. his
neighbors refuse to help him. Exactly one year later, a person using the same
costume emerges and starts murdering every person who carries any kind of
complicity in Jennings' murder.
Has the Druid returned or is something else going on...?
I
finished watching 'Solstice' last night and
immediately kicked myself for watching it so soon after 'Guilty Party'. The ‘Slasher’ seasons all follow the same approach and that
makes it difficult to come up with anything new when you’ve already watched
another season over the past week. Dammit… Oh well, it’s not like I’ve read anything
instead so here goes… 😉
If you’ve watched any of the other seasons then there are no
surprises here with a cast of unlikeable characters slowly being offed by the
killer while the police try and figure out what’s going on (and also falling
foul of the killer). What you can say is that three seasons in, the show knows
exactly what it is doing and does it all very smoothly, playing with the viewer
without even seeming to really try. If you’ve watched previous seasons then you
may think that you can see someone’s end coming but the show still has the ability
to surprise you and then shock you with just how gory the deaths can be. And
they really can with the camera seeming to have a lot of fun showing you well,
everything… I’ve got a pretty strong stomach for this kind of thing but there
were a couple of occasions where I found myself wondering.
The mystery of the killer is very intriguing and asks a lot of
questions of why people are suddenly dying a year later. There’s more to it
than the anniversary of the first killing though, and that’s all I’ll say on that
front as it’s pretty rewarding to watch it all come together at the finale. And
what I really liked about that? Well, it’s how the show messes with your perceptions
of who ‘deserves’ to have the Druid kill them and who is still standing at the
end of it. The people that you think ‘should’ make it through are more often the
ones with the darkest secret and that casts the show in a whole new light once
you realise what really went down…
‘Slasher: Solstice’ doesn’t really do anything new but the
question is, does it really need to? I’d say no, not when it does the important
things so well. Another more than solid season that has me looking forward to
more seasons of ‘Slasher’ to come.
