'Marvel Zombies' – Kirkman, Phillips, Suydam (Marvel)

I think I've done pretty damn well to keep my 'Books for the TBR Pile' going, for as long as I have, without interruption. Seriously, well done me ;o) There was always going to be something that ended the run though and this week, it was a combination of there being nothing that I wanted (in my usual charity shop haunts) and the fact that Payday was just a little too far away for me to be buying books from anywhere else. It's a shame but it happens. Payday is next Friday though so don't worry about next week ;o) I'm sure I'll have some books to share with you all. What about now though and why does the title of this post start off with 'Marvel Zombies'...? Well, I loved the latest 'What If...?' so much that I thought it was about time that I tracked down my old copy of 'Marvel Zombies' (the first one, I had to get rid of the rest.... dammit) and give it a re-read. So I did, and I did... Torn from the pages of Ultimate Fantastic Fou...

'Doctor Who: The Movie' (1996)

New Year's Eve 1999, Earth is about to run out of time... Returning home to Gallifrey with the remains of his arch-enemy, the Master, the TARDIS is forced off course, plunging the Doctor into the middle of gang warfare in downtown San Francisco. Critically wounded in the shootout, the Doctor has to regenerate to save his own life. And he's not the only one – the Master now has a new body with whih to wreak havoc, and his ultimate goal is to take the Doctor's own existence. As the clock counts down to the start of a new millennium, the Doctor has to stop the Master destroying all life on Earth, but at what cost...? This has proved to be one of the more difficult 'Doctor Who' posts to write as I've got nothing to frame it round. Most 'Doctor Who' stories featured here have been really formative for one reason or another. This one though... All I can really remember, from the first time that I saw it, is a vague sense of anti-climax and smoking a slight...

‘The Walking Dead Volume 32: Rest In Peace’ – Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard (Image)

This is old news to everyone else but for me, ‘The Walking Dead’ comic book series finished a couple of days ago and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I mean, don’t get me wrong, every story has to end sometime and no matter what the reason was here (can you tell I’m still a little cynical?), it was clearly time for it all to come to a close. The story had run its course. Having said that though, ‘The Walking Dead’ is a story that I’ve been reading for a long old time now, years in fact. Not just that, it’s a series that has kept me company through some tough times and now it’s not here anymore. Despite the issues that I’ve had with the series as a whole (namely the ‘find shelter, meet this week’s version of the governor, lose someone special and have to either find shelter again or bolster what you have’ approach), I don’t mind admitting that I’m sad to see it go. Oh well, that’s what re-reads are for I guess, that and finding new series to read. Any recommendations? But I’m cle...

‘The Swarm’ – Arthur Herzog (Pan)

Family attacked by Bees – Two Killed. This was the beginning, barely noticed. Only a few scientists felt the first stirrings of terror. But then the death toll began to mount – And terror erupted into national panic when great swarms of savage bees, deadly killers, blotted out the sun as they spread across America. Now, with the Empire State Building black with bees, a crack team of scientists race desperately against time to fight an enemy they only partly comprehend… I’ve got a couple of other books on the go, that should take priority, but ever since I found ‘The Swarm’ hiding in a pile of old books, I’ve been really intrigued by the title and just wanted to get into it. Of course, there’s the fact that the near universally reviled film ‘The Swarm’ was based upon this book; I’ve never seen the film (might have to do something about that now) but the prospect of seeing what the fuss was all about definitely appealed to me. Not just that, I’m really scared of bees and wasps so I t...

'What If… Zombies!?'

You know me by now, I’m the first to admit that I’m a bit rubbish at remembering when my favourite shows are on and that’s why my ‘TV posts’ rarely appear on the same day as the show is broadcast. That’s just the way it goes, so long as I watch it in the end then it's all good. That wasn't the case this week though. The second I knew that we were getting 'Marvel Zombies' (in some form) then it was like the date just crept into the back of my head and stayed there until this morning when it burst through to the front of my head and demanded all the attention. What? I love zombies and I really enjoyed reading Kirkman's 'Marvel Zombies' back in the day (might even be time for a re-read now). For obvious reasons (Ahem! Disney...), we were never going to get the full 'Marvel Zombies' experience as a 'What If...?' episode but what we get here is close enough and a lot of fun. And we get some bonus Chadwick Boseman too (I don't know why my eye...

'The Sword and the Stallion' – Michael Moorcock (Granada)

Mark this moment well as moments like this don't come along too often for me... I've actually finished another Moorcock 'Eternal Champion' series! ;o) The blog is what...? Only just under three years old now and this is the second trilogy of his that I've managed to get through... It's no surprise that both of them feature Corum, quite possibly (and by possibly, I think I mean definitely) my favourite of the Eternal Champions. Here's a man who has lost everything (including his family, his human love and a couple of body parts but still fights valiantly to protect humankind from threats including it's own kind. Corum has been through a fair bit, over the last five books, but it's almost time for his journey to end with one final fight and a reckoning. The time for the final fight, against the Fhoi Myore, has come but the Mabden people are sorely outnumbered by their foes. Prince Corum's latest quest then, takes him to Ynys Scaith, hazardous Isle...

'The Lords of Misery' – Eric Powell (Albatross Funnybooks)

I've been meaning to post about more comic books and where better to jump back on the saddle than with 'The Goon'...? I'll be honest, I haven't been too sure about the direction that the last two books have taken (or even if there is a direction at the moment) but 'The Goon' is still a 'must read' for me and a title that I will always make time for. If you like your comics a little pulpy and weird (with a hint of toilet humour, okay... more than a hint) then you need to be making time for 'The Goon' as well. But you knew that already... ;o) I'd been meaning to grab a copy of 'The Lords of Misery' for a while but a number of things meant that I had to wait until a few days ago before finally getting my hands on it. I finally read it over the weekend and... The Lords of Misery… a mysterious organization made up (unwillingly) by history’s most notorious dregs. Through the ages they have battled an enigmatic and unstoppable force. A...
