‘V/H/S/Mixtape’, ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ & ‘It Ends’

Apologies for the ‘blogging silence’ yesterday; I’m looking after the cats, again, and yesterday was all about damage control…

You see, ‘little cat’ lives for getting out of the house and having adventures but it was raining (hard) and she didn’t like that, choosing to blame it on ‘big cat’ who was already feeling out of sorts because her family are away for the next week. You can see where this ended up. Honestly, I thought looking after my girls was hard work, trying to keep ‘little cat’ amused etc is something else. Anyway…

I did get a little reading under my belt but that’s for another day. While the cats are asleep, lets take a look at some movies that I’ve been watching over the last few days. One strangely disappointing, one surprisingly good and the last one? I’m still not sure…

‘V/H/S/Mixtape’ (2026)

Over the last few years, horror streaming service ‘Shudder’ have been very kindly adding new entries to the ‘V/H/S’ franchise and this years instalment has arrived. I should say ‘finally arrived’ in my case, the release date was 9th October but it only turned up on my TV in the last couple of days. That was a particularly middle-aged rant, sorry…

Back to the movie… ‘V/H/S/Mixtape’ isn’t a bad movie, as such, with some more than decent stories being told here. ‘The Music of Mr. Sze’ and ‘Death Tone ‘ were favourites while ‘Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance’ made up for its incoherency by featuring loads of Muppets. I’ll forgive a lot if it’s balanced out by loads of Muppets :o)

‘Another Cabin’ and ‘Premature Burial’ felt a little disconnected though while the framing narrative… Lets just say that you need to be a big GWAR fan to get the humour and, presumably, the point of it. I’m not so… ‘V/H/S/Mixtape’ had it’s moments then but overall, was a little uneven to rank with my favourites in the franchise.

‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ (2025)

A quiet night, in an LA Diner, is interrupted by a disheveled time traveler looking for assistance in his fight against an AI that subjugates humanity (in the not too distant future). And this isn’t the first time our hero has come looking for help… Can ‘Attempt 117’ be the attempt that finally makes a difference?

Well, I’ve got to say it… It was sheer luck that I found myself watching this movie (thanks autoplay!), I did have fun watching it and I’m still alive to tell the tale. Sorry, I had to… ;o)

‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ is like any other time-travel movie, don’t think about the mechanics too much and you’ll be just fine. That’s the approach I took and I had the best time with it. Sam Rockwell’s ‘Man from the Future’ drives things along effortlessly and with the kind of assurance that really had me thinking that he’d done it 116 times already.

I’m not sure how some of it joined together but when a film barrels along like this, sometimes you just have to hold on and just enjoy the ride. Like I said, I did and thoroughly enjoyed the mix of action and humour.

‘It Ends’ (2025)

Four college friends, on a road trip, take a turn and find themselves on a road with no end, and they can’t turn back…

I’ll be honest, I’m still trying to get my head round this movie which somehow manages to be pretty creepy and really relaxing, all at the same time. Seriously, once they work out that staying in the car is best, a lot of the suspense goes but some really interesting questions remain.

Is ‘It Ends’ a metaphor for the transition into adulthood or is it simply a tale of the weirdness that you can encounter on America’s forgotten highways…? Either way, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen for this one; I came for the slightly unnerving concept and stayed for the exploration of how our travelers deal with it. There is a lot to question and it’s a testament to how well the movie does this that I’m still pondering over here. Quietly unsettling? Yes. Ultimately hopeful? Maybe...
