‘Invincible – Volume 2’ – Kirkman, Ottley, Crabtree (Image)

Was it really five months ago that I read ‘Invincible Vol.1’ and… wasn’t a hundred percent convinced? Well, I trust my blog a lot more than I do my memory, these days, so yes, yes it was ;o)

To be fair, I did enjoy Volume 1, I was just left wondering how much mileage there could be in a story where Invincible had it all laid out for him, ready to have it all. The powers, the costume, the evil father… Hang on :o)

The Guardians of the Globe are dead. Now, Mark Grayson must try to fill their role as Earth’s newest superhero – Invincible. But there’s one question on everyone’s minds: who killed them? Think, Mark. Think!

Sometimes, being the last one to the party can actually be a good thing as I don’t have to worry too much about spoilers when I’m writing these posts ;o) I’m going to assume that if you haven’t read the books already then you’ve more than likely watched the show on Prime. Or maybe you just read the Wikipedia entries and never got round to either of the first two, it’s all good ;o) If you haven’t been following this series… Maybe stop reading here.

Anyway…

If you’re still reading, the identity of the killer was the cliffhanger that Vol.1 ended on so Vol.2 isn’t so much about solving the mystery as it is watching our killer struggle, with having committed the deed, and then confess to the one Hero who is still trying to get his head round the job (amongst other things). It all comes together for the kind of explosive finale that lasts several pages and ends so neatly that you can’t help but wonder if you’re meant to keep on reading. For the record, I will keep on reading :o) Kirkman has done something pretty special here; turning things on their head just enough to keep things fresh and interesting but strangely familiar at the same time (the Bookstooge had it right in the Vol.1 comments, it’s not hard to work out who Kirkman is riffing off here). And it all comes with a keen mix of of action and humour that kept me fully engaged. Any comic book that throws a little ‘Next Generation’ into its plot, for a laugh, (and it lands) gets my vote every time ;o) And the artwork continues to complement the (hectic) plot incredibly well, I can’t ask for a lot more than that really.

So now I’m wondering what Kirkman will come up with next… It might take me a little longer to get round to than normal (job-hunting) but all of a sudden, I’m following this story with a lot more interest. I might even have to give the show a go now.

    Yep, I trust my blog for book reviews too. If I can't remember what I read 2 weeks ago, how am I going to remember what I thought about it? Thank goodness blogging is our backup memory!

  Page Count: 326 Pages It feels like a while since I last had an ‘Aliens’ post here (‘Aliens: Genocide’, back in May , just in case you were wondering…) but I have been pecking away at ‘Alien Harvest’, a page here and then a few pages here. ‘Green and Grey’ & ‘Waiting Death’ (From ‘Soldiers of the Imperium: An Astra Miltarum Omnibus’ – Black Library’)

  The weather is cooling down a bit, at least for now, but my tired (slightly overheated) old brain is taking a little while to catch up so, as you’ve probably gathered, I’m all about the short reads this week. Bits and pieces to keep me ticking over and entertained. And ‘Alien Harvest’, as well, but I already moaned about that yesterday , no more moaning about it today ;o) Anyway… I’m doing pretty well with my, kind of, resolution to read more books that I already own (it’s still a ‘work in progress’ but I’m happy with it) so it was no surprise that I decided to go for a couple of Imperial Guard short stories from the ‘Soldiers of the Imperium’ collection – a book that has gone unread for… lets just say ‘too long’. ‘Wolverine : Old Man Logan’ – Millar, McNiven (Marvel)

  Page Count: 256 Pages Long ago, there lived a Graeme who was having a pretty rough time and bought loads of comic books to cheer himself up. Some tough lessons, about the transient nature of money, followed but the comic books stuck around for a little longer so, things (kind of) balanced out ;o) One of those comic books was the collected ‘Old Man Logan’ and it was an awesome read (yes, I was that Graeme, in case you hadn’t worked it out). Thanks to the aforementioned transient nature of money, and the need for more, I had to get rid of my old copy but a couple of weeks ago, I saw another copy for sale and figured that it was time to pay ‘Old Man Logan’ another visit. When eBay is full of overpriced second hand copies, it’s nice to see Marvel do the decent thing and publish a new edition. Or, more likely, see an opportunity to make more money. Either way, I have a new book so I’m happy :o) A future world savaged and sundered by super villains, the United States ain’t what it used...
