Movie Night! ‘GCSE Results Day’ Edition
Not mine, my eldest daughters (I did my GCSEs far too long ago for them to make for an interesting blog post), I think she’ll be ok, she certainly put the work in, we just need to head to the school, later today, and collect her results. Wish her luck… :o)
While I’m off doing that, let me leave you with some quick thoughts on some movies that I’ve watched recently. It’s a bit of a mixed bag this time round; some just weren’t up to much while others were more of a case of ‘right movie, wrong time’ (the focus is all on finishing up with work right now, not the best state of mind to settle down with a movie). Oh well, you can’t win em’ all…
‘Scared Shitless’ (2024)
A plumber and his germophobic son find themselves working unpaid overtime when a callout for a blocked toilet turns into a battle for survival against a creature lurking in the pipes…
Scared Shitless? Erm… I wasn’t and while toilet humour is a favourite brand of mine, it didn’t stretch to a whole films worth of humour. Steven Ogg came across as little subdued here and there wasn’t really anyone else who could step up and carry the movie instead. The monster looked cool but I needed a little more than that. Okay, a lot more than that.
Proof then that I am just as much a sucker for a funny movie title as I’ve ever been, I really need to learn a lesson here but somehow, I doubt I will ;o)
‘Jackass: Best and Last’ (2026)
I still maintain that there’s no such thing as a bad ‘Jackass’ movie but ‘Best and Last’ isn’t the best of the bunch, not at all.
From where I’m sat, this film really needed to concentrate on either being a documentary, about the history of ‘Jackass’, or a whole film full of new stuff. It tried to do both and didn’t leave itself enough time to do either justice. And that was a real shame as I think there was enough to either concept to make a more than decent instalment here.
As it is, ‘Best and Last’ had its moments, there just weren’t enough of them to make for a consistently good movie. Oh well, I’ve got all the other ‘Jackass’ movies so I can’t complain too much ;o)
‘Evil Dead Burn’ (2026)
After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws but respite is fleeting as a certain book has been read from and the Deadites are already here…
I’m really not sure how I feel about ‘Evil Dead Burn’ but the good news is that it’s very much an ‘Evil Dead’ film, of the newer breed, so I will be watching it again; hopefully I’ll be able to make my mind up one way or the other ;o)
I think what it boiled down to, for me, is that while the middle parts of ‘Burn’ are ‘Evil Dead through and through, I’m half and half about how this film links to its predecessor ‘Evil Dead Rise’. I loved the way how the opening of ‘Burn’ flowed seamlessly from ‘Rise’, I wasn’t so sure that the ending needed to close that loop (as it were). I won’t give too much away (not least because I’m still trying to get my head round it), it just didn’t ring true for me. That’s just me though ;o)
Luckily, like I said, the middle part of ‘Burn’ is very much ‘New Evil Dead’ with plenty of scares and gore that hit the target of being eyecatching and moving things forward at a brisk pace.
The way things have been just recently, I’ll take that and overall, I’m counting this viewing as a win… Kind of, maybe. I reckon another viewing will tip it one way or the other :o)

Can anyone recommend me a decent film to watch? I'm not doing too well at the moment...
