‘Conan the Barbarian #31’ & ‘Event Horizon: Inferno #3’

Doesn’t that title look like the kind of football scoreline where the losing side ends up promising to refund their supporters for the cost of tickets and travel…? ;o)

Sorry, yesterday was a busy one as well as being far too hot to be so busy. The kind of day where you go for a hospital appointment and the nurse taking your blood pressure asks if it’s normally that low. For the record, the nurse tried taking it again but the second one was worse and she decided to just stick with the first reading…

Anyway :o) By the time I made it home last night, I wasn’t much use for anything but these two comics were waiting for me so I was able to end the day on a fairly decent note; one comfy chair and a couple of comics that I’d been looking forward to finally reading. Let me tell you a bit about them…

‘Conan the Barbarian’ #31 – Zub, Braithwaite, Rodriguez (Titan Comics, Heroic Signatures)

Remember when I said that I really needed to go back and find a copy of #29, just to find out exactly why The Son of the Tooth was after Conan? Well, that never happened and I’m still no clearer on what led to this confrontation; that’s on me though, I’ll have to do something about it… eventually.

The good news is that it almost doesn’t matter why Conan and the Son are fighting. What really matters is that Zub and Braithwaite give us an epic fight that challenges Conan in a way that you don’t normally see. Pure brawn won’t overwhelm the Son and animal cunning is no good against an enemy that heals from his wounds as fast as Conan can deliver them. Of course it’s Conan so we know how it has to end; for a few pages though, I was genuinely wondering how on earth Conan would pull it off and that says a lot about how good this issue is.

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a little hint about possible things to come. I mean, I’m definitely following this series anyway but, ‘The Woeful Eye’ is awake… I’ve got my fingers crossed that this is something that is expanded upon going forwards.

‘Event Horizon: Inferno’ #3 – Ward, Carey, Honchar (ID Dark)

I’ve been wondering how Christian Ward would link the ending of the movie to ‘Inferno’ and this issue is where that question is answered. The movie ends with a pretty big question being asked and all credit to Ward here, he links that ending, to his opening, pretty much seamlessly. We get to find out a little more about the Event Horizon itself and its relationship with Starck; there is only so much you can do with a spaceship though so there are also accompanying glimpses of its creator…

I also had another question about this issue, I won’t remind you as it’s answered here and while it makes for some powerful storytelling, I was a little heartbroken by the revelation. It had to happen though.

‘Inferno’ #3 is the point where Ward’s story not only finds its groove, it then promptly steps things up a notch and gets all terrifying at the same time. The countdown to #4 started the second I read the final page of #3 :o)

  1. Glad to hear that Event Horizon comic is staying good. Sometimes these things start strong and then whimper out. that doesn't seem to be happening here and I'm glad for that.
