'Slither' (2006), 'Dolly' (2026) and 'Revenge' (2017)

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that while it's never too cold to curl up with a good book (or I'm assuming, a bad one), it can definitely be too warm. Well, we're in the middle of another heat-wave over here and yep, I've got very little reading under my belt this week. I mean, I have managed a couple of books but you should see the pile of books where I've either read a few pages or picked the book up, only to put it straight back down again. Oh well, there's always next week etc ;o)

So, what have I been doing in the meantime? I've been watching movies of course ;o) Nothing too demanding (no surprise there...), just good fun to watch, that's all I'm good for at the moment. Lets take a quick look at them then...

'Slither' (2006)

Something falls out of the sky and crashes in the woods outside Wheelsy, South Carolina; local resident Grant Grant finds it but it also finds him... Soon, local pets are going missing and then, the residents of Wheelsy also start to disappear. Can Police Chief Bill Pardy solve the mystery before Grant's hunger consumes everything...?

I've been watching 'Slither', on a semi-regular basis, for years now and it was time for a rewatch; the kind of rewatch where if you don't catch a particular moment on the TV, it doesn't matter because you know what's coming anyway. It's 'Slither' though, and I love this movie, so once the movie started up there was never any danger of my missing a second of it.

'Slither' was a safe bet then and it won't surprise you to hear that it maintains its perfect record (from where I'm sat) of being a thoroughly entertaining mixture of laughs, chills and proper 'gross out body horror' like we used to have when I was a kid (sorry, I'm feeling my age today). Very much the kind of movie that you watch with a couple of beers to hand or, if you're me and just about enduring the heat, a Mars Ice Cream ;o)

'Dolly' (2026)

A hiking trip becomes a trip into terror when a couple stumble into the territory of Dolly, a hulking figure in a porcelain doll mask and a little too handy with a spade. The terror is only just beginning for Macy though as Dolly's plans for her become clear...

'Dolly' has been popping up on my trips through what Prime Video has to offer. In the end, I took the hint and gave it a watch the other night. And...

On the face of it, 'Dolly' isn't so different from most other slasher movies. The film more than makes up for this though by not only laying on the gore really thick, but giving the viewer absolutely no idea why any of this is happening. You're just dropped straight into it with Macy, and that means the focus is completely on the big question, will Macy survive... Maybe that answer is a little too obvious but that doesn't stop 'Dolly' from being really tense and creepy over the rest of the movie, and there's a twist partway through that I really enjoyed. There's talk of a 'Dolly 2' and I hope it comes to fruition, I'd watch it.

'Revenge' (2017)

A romantic weekend is rudely interrupted when friends of Jen's boyfriend arrive for an impromptu hunting trip, but things are about to get much worse... Jen is raped and then left for dead at the bottom of a cliff. Her boyfriend should have made sure that she was actually dead...

A few months ago, I started watching 'Revenge' but only made it through the first ten minutes before getting called away for something or other. The other day, I figured I'd give it another go and I'm glad that I did.

I'll be honest, given that we don't really find out much about Jen, you're going to have to give your disbelief a couple of hours off and just keep telling yourself that of course she's great at ambushes and taking care of business with a shotgun that never seems to run out of shells. Hmmm... ;o)
The good news though is that not only is 'Revenge' beautifully shot but isn't as straightforward as it seems either. The pursuit of revenge doesn't go easily for Jen and that resulting sense of uncertainty keeps 'Revenge' moving forwards, powered by its own tension. Worth a watch if you have a Shudder subscription.

Have you guys seen any decent movies recently? What were they? Leave a comment and let me know.

  1. Another heat wave eh? You folks are getting hammered this summer it seems like. Do you have a cooling cloth? I have one for the really hot days. Soak it in water, wrap it around my head and as the water evaporates, it helps cool me down. When I wear mine, Mrs B calls me "Sheik Bookstooge" and laughs her head off. It works great since I shave my head, but even just wrapping it around my neck helps.

The last movie I watched was Resident Evil: Retribution (the 5th in the franchise with Jovovich) and I've got a post coming out tomorrow with my thoughts on it.
