Movies, Movies and… More Movies.
My reading has kind of stalled over the last few days; there’s a few reasons for it but honestly, nothing that you’d be interested in hearing about. I’m just going to dust myself down and take another shot at it this week instead; that’s all you can do sometimes ;o)
As is often the case here; when I’m not finishing books, I tend to watch more movies instead. That’s what happened over the last week and it ended up being a bit of a mixed bag. Let me tell you all about it…
‘Society’ (1989)
A Beverley Hills teen feels increasingly alienated from his wealthy family but there’s far more to it than even he realizes.
I love ‘body horror’ and I’ve been meaning to watch ‘Society’ for years now, so when I saw the movie was on ‘Shudder’, watching it was inevitable ;o) Now that I’ve seen it, I have to say… erm…
You watch ‘body horror’ movies for the practical effects (well, I do) and ‘Society’ does not disappoint. I got what I came for, that’s the bottom line. Plot-wise though, that’s where the film felt a little flat. There’s a nice line in paranoia running through ‘Society’ but the film left bits unexplained and that made it feel a little disjointed for my taste. I’m looking at you ‘Clarissa’s Mum’, what was that all about? Having said that though, ‘Society’ was still ten times better than…
‘7 Deadly Sins’ (2019)
House arrest, and a looming prison sentence, are not going to stop a group of friends throwing the best Spring Break Party ever. What they summon, through a party game, though… That will stop their party for good.
So… If the Mexican lady knew what was going to happen (and she survived the last game so she would), why did she suggest playing the game all over again? If it was that or, well… just getting on with the rest of my life, I know what I’d do. It was this question, and an over-reliance on just lining ‘dumb teens’ up to be killed that turned this movie into ‘background noise’. I don’t mind a ‘dumb horror movie’ but this was a little too dumb even for me.
‘Bodycam’ (2025)
Two police officers investigate a domestic incident and there is an accidental shooting. The officers try to cover it up but something has already noticed…
This sounded like the kind of thing you’d see in a ‘V/H/S’ movie and I love the ‘V/H/S’ movies so here we are :o)
And yep, I can absolutely see ‘Bodycam’ sitting very comfortably in that franchise. It’s a little too straightforward but still creepy enough to have fun with. And the fact that you’re seeing it through the officers bodycams makes it all a little more real somehow. The human eye can be fooled but a camera just records what it sees… Or does it?
‘Rabies’ (2010)
A random group of people find themselves in a nature reserve, at the mercy of a psychopathic killer with no mercy at all. He’s not the killer though…
You know me, I like ‘slashers’ but I have issues with the ‘conveyor belt’ approach where the director lines up the cast and… you know. If it’s done slightly differently though, I’m there for it. I won’t give too much away here, lets just say that ‘Rabies’ is still a ‘conveyor belt’ movie but done in such a way that I was hooked for the whole thing. Definitely worth a look although I’m not sure why they called it ‘Rabies’ when there was none…
