‘Unicorn Academy: Olivia and Snowflake’ – Julie Sykes (Nosy Crow Ltd)

Page Count: 103 Pages

Because ‘Lord Samper’s Library’ has a couple of shelves for children’s books, you’ve already seen a few feature here over the last few years. Or is it because my youngest daughter got me to read a ‘Unicorn Academy’ book and then suggested, with my ex-wife, that I post about it here? A little bit of ‘A’ and a little bit of ‘B’… Drunk with happiness at having new lens’ in my glasses, and a ‘soft touch’ when it comes to my daughters, I figured I’d go for something very different, to my normal reading, and see how it all went.

Imagine a school where you meet your own unicorn and have amazing adventures together! That's what happens for the girls at Unicorn Academy on beautiful Unicorn Island.

Olivia is so happy to be at Unicorn Academy. She hopes her sweet unicorn, Snowflake, will discover her magic before graduation day! Everyone is busy decorating Unicorn Academy for the graduation ball, but it looks like someone is trying to ruin the party. It's up to Olivia and Snowflake to save the day - and the school!

Well, damn… I don’t think I’ve ever read anything as sickeningly sweet as ‘Olivia and Snowflake’ but I can see why my daughter enjoyed it and while I don’t think I’ll be reading any more of this series (although my daughter may now have other plans), it made for a change of pace that I’ve needed just recently. ‘Olivia and Snowflake’ is actually the last book in this arc but I had no trouble at all getting up to speed with events from preceding books, thanks ‘exposition’! :o)

I’m not going to lie, I saw everything coming, bar the identity of the mysterious hooded villain, so there were no real surprises here. And it all ends in just the way you’d expect. That’s only half the point of this story though, Julie Sykes does a great line in ‘Friends no matter what’ and ‘Lets save the school!’ that makes for a really sweet and wholesome read (just maybe a little too sweet for this jaded, ‘grimdark preferring’, reader).

I’m not going to say much more as I’m clearly not the target audience (by about forty years) but... There’s always something to be said for sharing your favourite books with someone you love, and my daughter and I got to do that (she’s very unlikely to read past the blurb of Warhammer 40K though) so it was time well spent as far as I’m concerned.

Normal service will resume tomorrow ;o)
