More Horror Movies…
Bit of an odd day yesterday… I had a day all to myself which was cool (natural loner and all that ) but also awkward, at the same time, as I can be pretty bad at spending time in my own company (because apparently, I’m that much of a loner...) I’ll get there but yesterday, all I was good for was sitting in front of the telly and watching horror movies. I’ve got a couple of books on the go, at the moment, but nothing close enough to finishing that I can post about. While I try and solve that, let me quickly tell you about those movies…
‘Brain Dead’ (2007)
No, not that ‘Brain Dead’ or the ‘Brain Dead’ that sometimes goes by ‘Dead Alive’; this is the ‘Brain Dead’ where two students, a pastor and his assistant are held hostage by two escaped convicts in a cabin, while murderous zombies prowl outside.
‘Brain Dead’ very much sits in the ‘low budget movie’ end of the scale but is still a hell of a lot of fun, staying well clear of creating any suspense and going full on with the practical effects and gore instead. It’s a move that, coupled with some sharp comedic dialogue from Joshua Benton’s Clarence, works really well. Brains are eaten, peoples heads are torn in two and the whole thing was very watchable.
‘Night of the Demons’ (1988)
Teenagers throw a Halloween party, at a deserted funeral parlour, only to find their séance attracting demonic attention…
I know I’m kind of coming at this the wrong way round but, I loved how the ending came out of thin air, even though they literally set it up in the opening five (or so) minutes. Real sleight of hand stuff :o) It’s a bit of a shame then that the rest of the film was signposted a little too much and there was no real tension, to the proceedings, as a result. I know those signposts are kind of the whole point but it felt more like setting dominoes up, to be knocked down, rather than an actual plot. I did get to see some eyeballs pop though, which made up for some of it.
‘Highway to Hell’ (1991)
An eloping couple run into supernatural trouble, on a back road, and the bride-to-be is dragged into hell by a demonic policeman. Her fiance must rescue her and the only way to do that is for him to follow her into hell itself…
This was a bit more like it, the plot was daft but at least there was one and there was some point to it. I’m a bit of a fan of ‘Hell Cop’ as well, he’s not actually that good at his job but definitely looks the part.
‘Creepozoids’ (1987)
Deserters, from the battlegrounds of World War III, take shelter in an underground bunker. There is food and escape from the acid rain, but there is something else hiding in the bunker; something that will make them wish they’d taken their chances outside…
I will watch anything with zombies in it; I will also watch anything with a daft title, just so I can say that I did, so there was never any doubt that I would watch ‘Creepozoids’ once I saw it on Prime. And… It was alright, just shot a little too darkly to really catch the monster, or its kills, and the cast weren’t particularly memorable either, just there to be lined up and dispatched. And the ‘giant rat’ really was just a giant toy that certain cast members waved around, just to make it look like it was attacking. And it actually looks quite sweet, as you can see :o)

Okay, maybe ‘Creepozoids’ wasn’t that great after all… At least I got to watch another movie with a daft title ;o)
