‘Conan the Barbarian #25’, ‘Sonja Reborn #2’ & ‘Murder Podcast #1’

Insomnia paid me a visit on Sunday night so I wasn’t good for much yesterday, hopefully today will be a little more productive as far as my reading goes. Lets see…

Yesterday wasn’t a total write-off though. I watched some half decent movies (more about those another time, I’m pretty sure you guys don’t want another ‘Movie Post’ right now…) and read a few of the comics that I picked up over the weekend. One good, one ‘not so good’, another that was OK and also prompted me to finally sort out an eye test :o) Let me tell you about them…

‘Conan the Barbarian #25’ – Zub, Horley (Titan Comics, Heroic Signatures)

As King of Aquilonia, Conan welcomes a mysterious stranger to his court. This hooded wanderer has come to bestow a gift on Conan but it cannot be given, only earned. History itself waits with bated breath as Conan must face his greatest challenges all over again.

This is #25 but could just as easily be #1, if you’re picking up the series for the first time, and I love how Jim Zub manages to pull off recapping Conan’s adventures and making this story a great ‘jumping on point’, all at the same time. The stories are Howard’s but the framing narrative is all Zub and I really enjoyed not only how it illustrated the precariousness of Conan’s reign as well as giving a little context to… I’m not going to spoil the ending, it’s well worth the price of entry.

A fascinating tale about the nature of immortality, accompanied by some stunning artwork from Alex Horley, befitting a milestone issue of ‘Conan the Barbarian’.

‘Sonja Reborn #2’ – Priest, Miracolo (Dynamite)

Is Maggie Sutherland suffering from concussion and dreaming that she is Red Sonja? Or has something happened to Red Sonja, now under the delusion that she is Maggie Sutherland? Either way, one of the two needs to learn how to swing a sword; danger lurks in the forest…

I don’t often pick up ‘Red Sonja’ (although I have enjoyed Gail Simone’s take on the character) so while I was in Forbidden Planet, I thought I’d take a chance on #2 of ‘Sonja Reborn’. And… I really should have picked up #1 first. In my defence, I would have gone for #1 if it had been on the shelf but, here we are…

Not necessarily the book’s fault then but but #2 wasn’t a great place to jump in at; the moments with Red Sonja weren’t too bad but opening with Maggie Sutherland felt like it jarred a little too much. And what was going on with the phone? I liked the art though :o)

As an experiment then, further confirmation that I need to get into series on the ground floor. I may revisit this story in trade format to get the whole picture.

‘Murder Podcast #1’ – Haun, Tisserand (Ignition Press)

Fans of true crime podcasts are noticing brand-new episodes of a show they thought was over appearing in their feed, but when they cue up the first episode, they find themselves overtaken by a murderous urge.

One that only stops when the killer is stopped, leaving a gruesome death toll in its wake. For Mina and her friends, these killings are just another topic of their daily gossip, a potential new case for the next true crime show they can’t get enough of.

Yet, as the killings get closer and closer to their own lives, it’s becoming clear that there is more going on below the surface than any of them realises.

I thought I’d take a chance with something different and a spaced-housewife holding a kitchen knife, covered in blood, was all it took for me to give ‘Murder Podcast’ a shot.

And it’s definitely an intriguing mystery (possibly supernatural, I’m not a hundred percent sure) that I wouldn’t mind following for a bit. The cast aren’t engaging me yet but I’ll be honest, I’ve never listened to a murder podcast (I’m more about ‘police arrest’ videos on Youtube) so I’m happy to give it the benefit of the doubt for at least another issue and see what happens. I’m not the audience but I think I’d like to be :o)

And yep, this is the book that will have me in town today, booking an eye test. Light font, on a light background, really doesn’t work for me but that’s on me, not the book.

    1. Thanks :o) I couldn't put it off any longer, hopefully nothing that a new pair of glasses won't fix.
