Some Movies I’ve Been Watching…
Yesterday was a bit of a day so once I was back home, I pretty much just came to a stop and found some movies to watch for the rest of the evening. While I try and get my head round what to say about Robert Bloch’s ‘Midnight Pleasures’ collection (‘really good’ doesn’t make for much of a post…), let me quickly tell you about them.
‘Ick’ (2024)
When a mysterious ooze, called ‘The Ick’, begins mutating in the small American town of Eastbrook, science teacher Hank Wallace must somehow find a way of stopping it while also trying to find out if one of his students is his daughter…
For what it’s worth… Hank manages to do one but we’re left uncertain as to whether he manages the other. You can probably guess which is which ;o)
As for the film itself… I’ll be honest, for a movie called ‘Ick’, it really needed to be a lot more ‘icky’ than it actually was. Which was a shame because I liked the humour on offer and there were moments where I thought, ‘yeah, that was pretty icky’. It just wasn’t ‘icky’ enough at the end of the day, ‘The Blob’ (1988 version, of course) and ‘The Thing’ (1982) have nothing to worry about.
‘Pet Semetary’ (2019)
Sometimes dead is better but that is a lesson that Dr. Louis Creed isn’t quite ready to learn; even after what happened to his cat after he buried it in the woods. When tragedy strikes his family again, Creed takes the logical next step, he really shouldn’t have…
‘Fun Fact’… ‘Pet Semetary’ is the only Stephen King book that I’ve picked up and haven’t been able to finish; mostly because of the scene in the hospital but also because I skipped to the end and saw not only what came back, but what it did as well. Damn… I really need to pick the book up again and finally finish it off.
Anyway…
I still think we’re living through a golden age of ‘Stephen King Movie’ re-makes and ‘Pet Semetary’ can sit proudly amongst that number. It’s as bleak as hell and really knows how to make you jump, even when you can see it coming. And that evil cat… I knew I was right not to trust cats :o)
‘Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150AD’ (1966)
You think you know the story of the Daleks invasion of Earth but you don’t, not until you’ve seen Peter Cushing as the Doctor ;o) It has been years since I last saw ‘Daleks Invasion Earth’ and I’m not getting any younger so figured it was time for another watch.
And I’m glad I did. I knew the story already (so no surprises were waiting for me) but the warm buzz of ‘Sunday Afternoon’ nostalgia made up for it and despite some changes that didn’t feel necessary, this film is still a lot of fun to watch. I mustn’t leave it so long before I watch it again.
