Books for the TBR Pile... 'Unexpected' Edition...
Well, I say 'unexpected' but... who am I kidding? Let me tell you about it.
I was rattling around the flat by myself (had my daughters over on Saturday so had Sunday to myself) and was starting to go a little stir crazy so thought I'd head over to Greenwich and see what was what, maybe have a late lunch. As you know, I've got teetering TBR piles ( and wasn't planning to add to them) but I was walking through the market, stopped at the second hand book stall and...
'The Ribos Operation' is the only 'Key to Time' book that I haven't read so that was an easy purchase. 'The Horror of Fang Rock' and 'The Web of Fear' were all about the nostalgia, I didn't even try and fight it.
And then I went into 'Rare Books & Curios', just to have a quick look through the 'Sci-Fi/Fantasy' paperbacks. I wasn't expecting to find anything but couldn't head home without having a look first, you know how it is ;o) The owner saw me and knowing what I'm into, pulled out a whole load of books that I had no choice but to ponder over. So many good books had to be left behind, in the shop, but I still walked out with a bag full ;o)
I couldn't resist 'The Boats of the Glen Carrig', just need to finish 'The House on the Borderland' first and then I'll pick it up. And those Arthur Machen 'Panther covers' look amazing so I made sure to grab them too.
Apologies for the dodgy camera work here, that is a raven on the cover of 'London Tales of Terror'... You've probably noticed that I'm reading a fair few short stories at the moment; these three books are full of them and look like they could be fun for getting into over the course of October. I've got a really good feeling about 'Sea Tales of Terror' so may pick it up sooner.
And yep, my hands are never steady when I'm trying to take a picture. Sorry about that! I was about 80% certain that I didn't already have a copy of 'Conan the Liberator' so was confident enough to bring this one home with me. And the cover art for 'Frighteners' did exactly what it was meant to. Well played cover art, well played ;o)
And that was that for yesterday's book shopping, anything here catch your eye? Leave a comment and let me know.
Have you read anything by de Camp and Carter before? I haven't and I'm wondering if their Conan stuff is any good.
ReplyDeleteMy memory is atrocious, right now, so I did a quick search here and yes, I have :o) It's not bad stuff but obviously was never going to be a patch on REH. They wrote the movie novelisation, for 'Conan the Barbarian' and I would recommend that.
