Books for the TBR Pile... 'Slim Pickings' Edition
Sorry for the no-show yesterday... I was feeling pretty sick and I also had my daughters round so something had to give and... you guessed it ;o)
Because sometimes, the hunt doesn't go well and you know what...? That's ok :o) not every trip out can end up in a second hand bookshop or finding a hidden gem in a charity shop. It would be awesome if they all did but I'd run out of shelf space really fast ;o) And not only that, I really am trying to make more of an effort to read books that are already on my shelves. It's not going too badly but I'd like to read more; the summer holidays are fast approaching so I might be able to make a little more headway soon. We'll see... ;o)
Having said all that though. I had a walk through Lewisham Town Centre, the other day (I was working from home and really needed to get away from my desk...) and still managed to come home with a couple of books, it happens :o) Let me show you what I found...
I don't normally leave the price tags on books, when I'm taking a picture for the blog, but I'll be honest, I'm still really pleased that I found a hardback copy of 'Starter Villain' for all of one pound. I haven't completely given up on 'The Kaiju Preservation Society' but I haven't been able to find my way into it so thought I might have better luck with 'Starter Villain' instead. I'm not sure when I'll get to it but I will let you know how it goes.
And 'The Tainted Cup'... I've had my eye on this book, for a while now, and after cashing in a whole load of scratch cards, I thought I'd have a little browse in Waterstones and here we are... Go on, have some blurb,
A peculiar crime. A brilliant investigator. A mystery of epic proportions.
In an opulent mansion at the borders of the Empire, an Imperial officer lies dead - killed when a tree spontaneously erupted from his body. Even here, where contagions abound and the blood of the Leviathans works strange magical changes, it's a death at once terrifying and impossible.
Called in to solve the crime is Ana Dolabra, an investigator whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricity. At her side is her new assistant, Dinios Kol, an engraver, magically altered to possess a perfect memory.
Soon, the mystery leads to a scheme that threatens the safety of the Empire itself. For Ana, all this makes for a deliciously thorny puzzle - at last, something to truly hold her attention. And Din? He'll just have to hold on for the ride.
Anyone here read 'The Tainted Cup'? If you have, let me know what you thought of it :o)
And that's your lot for this week. Whatever you're up to today, enjoy it. I'm going to sit in my comfy chair and chip away at some books that I really should have finished by now...
