‘Predator: Killer of Killers’, ‘Silver Nemesis’ and a quick trip to ‘Lovecraft Country’…

Yesterday did its best to defeat me but I fought it to a standstill. Well, a ‘standstill’ being about half five in the evening when I turned my laptop off and ordered a pizza ;o) I wasn’t in much of a state for reading so I ignored my latest TBR pile and settled down for a spot of TV instead…

‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ (2025)

A Viking raider, a Ninja from Feudal Japan and a WW2 fighter pilot must each face a Predator on safari before going on a journey of their own…

I’ll be honest, I love all the ‘Predator’ movies (even ‘The Predator’) so don’t expect too much objectivity here ;o) With that out of the way, ‘Killer of Killers’ is beautifully animated and looked superb from where I was sat. More importantly though, ‘Killer of Killers’ absolutely granted a longstanding wish of mine to see how a Ninja would do when facing off against a Predator; the inclusion of a Viking Shield Maiden was a very welcome bonus.

I don’t want to give too much away other than to say that we’re left in no doubt as to why the Predators keep coming back to Earth, for the hunt, and that the film does very well to give its leads some context instead of just chucking them into the fray; the plot is all the better for this approach.

‘Doctor Who: Silver Nemesis’ (1988)

The Doctor and Ace must fight neo-Nazis, fellow time travellers and the Cybermen for control of a statue, made of a living metal. That promises power to whoever holds it.

Prime Video is great for the likes of me, sat there with nothing to do except catch up on ‘Classic Doctor Who’ from when I was a kid. It’s a bit of a shame then that I didn’t choose a proper classic serial and went for ‘Silver Nemesis’ instead. Here’s a tale that has real ‘Doctor Who’ energy (everything seems to happen at least a hundred miles an hour) but no real plot to back it up, just a knock down fight between factions until the obvious party is the only one left standing. And that’s ok up to a point, I guess, sometimes that’s how the adventure goes; it just felt like it was all a little rushed and a little bit of a mess. The Cybermen had clearly been polished though, before going in front of the cameras, so, erm… that was nice ;o)

‘Lovecraft Country’ (2020)

I’d actually been working my way through the show, over the last week, but went for it last night and polished off the last few episodes and… I’m not a hundred percent sure about the show as a whole but there was enough happening here to make ‘Lovecraft Country’ a ‘definite re-watch’ in the future. Just quick thoughts here as I’m still trying to get my head round the show and I’m also well aware that I’m late to the party, again...

‘Lovecraft Country’ felt a little disjointed for the first few episodes, presumably because a lot of stuff was only just becoming known to Tic but it felt like the show didn’t quite know what it wanted to be and was trying to figure itself out. I’m normally pretty patient with that approach but not at the moment.

When ‘Lovecraft Country’ found its voice though, it was nothing short of compelling viewing with all my favourite pulp tropes threading through absorbing character arcs and one particularly creepy episode with two demonic, dancing, children. I hate creepy children so I loved that episode, if you know what I mean ;o) I’ll definitely give this another watch and I might (might) finally pick up the book now.

  1. Larry Correia wrote a short story about a samurai taking on a predator, if you're interested.
