And Some More Movies...

I bought a few books over the weekend but somehow managed to read very little; a little ‘Judge Dredd’ but that was about it. And that’s the way it goes sometimes, I spent a chunk of yesterday playing ‘Crash Team Racing’ with my youngest daughter and I don’t regret a second of it :o)

I did watch some more movies though because of course I did (needed to put a little distance between me and the last week). Let me tell you about them…

'Crabs!' (2022)

Mutated by nuclear runoff, a horde of murderous horseshoe crabs descend on a sleepy California town causing Prom Night terror. Against insurmountable odds, a ragtag band of locals devise an insane plot to save their town from the increasingly ginormous crab menace.

You can’t go wrong with a film about giant crabs… Can you? Well, kind of…

‘Crabs!’ is a bit of a mess, trying to do a bit too much in not enough time, but at the same time, it just revels in crab based carnage and that was all I was really after. The ending just takes things to the inevitable next level and makes it look easy.

‘Crabs!’ is incoherent but is far too much fun for that to be a dealbreaker.

‘Q – The Winged Serpent’ (1982)

NYPD detectives Shepard and Powell are working on a bizarre case of a ritualistic Aztec murder. Meanwhile, something big is attacking people of New York and only greedy small time crook Jimmy Quinn knows where its lair is. Are these two cases connected?

Now here’s a movie that I’ve meant to watch for years but never quite found the time for it. I’m not sure what changed over the weekend but I finally gave it a go and on the whole, was glad that I did.

‘Q – The Winged Serpent’ wasn’t as engaging as the title suggested it would be, probably because the police procedural stuff inevitably took precedence and one of those cases wasn’t as interesting as the other. You can guess which was which? Things got more interesting when the action shifted to the skies. David Carradine makes for an awesome New York cop but that wasn’t really a big surprise. For me, the real star of the show was Michael Moriarty’s ‘Jimmy Quinn’, a small time crook who suddenly finds himself a very important man, and wants to reap all the benefits of that.

Judge Dredd’ (1995)

Judges have become the supreme authority, in a near future Earth, with the power to dispense instant justice. Judge Dredd is the most feared law enforcer of them all but he may have just met his match at the hands of a former Judge out for revenge. Dredd is framed for murder, and he must do whatever it takes to restore justice to Mega City One.

I’ve been watching ‘Dredd’ a lot, just recently and thought it was time I paid the original movie another visit. There is a lot that wrong with this movie… For a start, it looks like a little thing but there’s a reason why Judge Dredd never takes his helmet off. In this movie, the second Dredd did that, it was like the character just disappears and we’re left with a Sylvester Stallone sci-fi movie… Which is ok but not the movie that I’m after. And I’m still trying to get my head round what putting Hammerstein in Mega City One does to the overall timeline.

Having said that though… ‘Judge Dredd’ is still fun to watch with a decent amount of action to be had and some familiar faces popping up here and there. And when it’s a re-watch and you know what you’re letting yourself in for, it’s a lot easier to let the negative stuff slide ;o) And Mega City One looks awesome here, just like in the comics.

‘Hell Hole’ (2024)

An American-led fracking crew working deep in the Serbian wilderness uncover the unimaginable: a dormant parasitic monster.

This one had been lurking in my watchlist for a few weeks and seemed like it would be a good thing to have on the TV while I woke up and had a little breakfast. And it was :o) ‘Hell Hole’ is very clearly held back by its budget (although the monster does look very cool) but I liked the concept and the actors really give it their all. I’m not sure I’d watch it again but it was a lot of fun to sit through :o)
