Weekend Movie Watching…
Work has been intense, the last few days and I’ve had a little trouble settling on things to watch or read. I never let that stop me though ;o) I’ll tell you about what I’ve been reading over the next few days. For now, lets take a little look at what I’ve been able to tick off a couple of watchlists.
‘Scanners’ (1981)
Cameron Vale is a ‘Scanner’, born with an advanced telepathic ability and trained to stop a dangerous Scanner, with extraordinary psychic powers, from waging war on the human race. There is more to his mission than Cameron realizes though, can anyone be trusted when they might just be able to read your mind.
I was watching ‘Scanner Cop II’ (which wasn’t very good, lets leave it at that) and it struck me that I’d never watched ‘Scanners’ all the way through. I’ll be honest, I’ve only ever seen the one clip; you know the clip I’m talking about ;o)
So I did something about that yesterday evening and… It was alright, I guess. Depends what you’re watching it for. The special effects are brilliant but I’ll be honest, the actual ‘telepath fights’ just looked like two guys being constipated at each other. At least they gave it a go ;o)
The plot… I’m not a big fan of medical conspiracies so when the film moved into that territory (away from constipated telepaths) it pretty much lost me but yeah, I got to see the ‘exploding head’ clip so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
‘The Rule of Jenny Pen’ (2024)
Confined to a secluded rest home and victim of a stroke that keeps him in a wheelchair, a former judge must stop an elderly psychopath who employs a child’s puppet to abuse the home’s residents.
I don’t enjoy medical conspiracies but I am absolutely on board for ‘evil doll’ movies so when I noticed ‘The Rule of Jenny Pen’ on Shudder, I was well up for it :o)
Slight spoiler alert… There are no evil dolls here, not the kind you’d expect anyway. What you actually get is so much better and I’m glad that I kind of fooled myself into giving this movie a go. What we have here is an examination of the quiet horror of being old and helpless along with the chaotic evil of a man who is finally free to do whatever he wants. These two elements complement each other perfectly and the movie is all the more chilling for it; especially how it ends with our hero learning a lesson about hiding evil in plain sight. Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow are superb in their roles. Worth a look if you have Shudder, worth forking out for if you don’t have Shudder.
‘V/H/S Beyond’ (2024)
If you frequent these parts, you’ll know how much I enjoy the ‘V/H/S’ franchise but it has taken me a little while to finally get round to watching ‘V/H/S Beyond’. I’ll admit that I wasn’t sure how well the sci-fi and horror would mix but I was happy to be proved wrong. This is definitely one of the more solid entries in the franchise, both in terms of the hit/miss ratio of the stories (I don’t think there was a miss) and how well the over-arching narrative works. I will definitely be watching it again :o)
