A Couple of Books that I Found & Some Movies that I watched...

What do you do when you only found a couple of books on your travels and you've only managed to stay awake through a few movies over the last couple week? Simple. You take the two 'half posts', join them together and see what happens next ;o)

It has been an odd last few days... I haven't been well and have been falling asleep at almost every time except when I've actually wanted to. And book-wise? Well... I've been focusing more on getting rid of books than buying them. I did find a couple though, let me show you :o)

I really wasn't looking for books but I saw these two for a pound each and I had £2 in my pocket... Seemed like too much of a coincidence for me not to buy them so... ;o)

I'll be honest, I can't see myself reading 'Fevre Dream' any time soon but it does fill in a gap in my 'Fantasy Masterworks' collection so, I'm happy. And 'Life, the Universe and Everything' is a book that I'm pretty sure I haven't read since my first year of high school (don't quote me, it has been a while though). You're more likely to see a review of that in the near future.

And those movies?

'Bubba Ho-Tep' (2002)

Elvis Presley and JFK are seeing out their last days in a Texas nursing home. All is peaceful, until an ancient Egyptian Mummy arrives to take the souls of the residents... Can Elvis and the 35th US President defeat this menace?

Some blurbs are so much fun to write out (or copy and paste, either works); 'Bubba Ho-Tep' might just be the most fun I've had with a blurb in a long time :o)

I've never seen 'Bubba Ho-Tep' and was expecting some crazy horror along the lines of the 'Evil Dead' movies. The crazy is there (I'll refer you back to that blurb) but the movie is a lot more serious than I was expecting and it's an approach that works. Elvis and JFK fighting the Mummy is what sold the movie me; its exploration of heroism and regret is what kept me watching. I'm not sure I'll go back to 'Bubba Ho-Tep' but I'm so glad that I finally gave it a shot. If you haven't seen it, give it a watch.

'Armed Response' (2017)

A remote facility, built as a prison with an AI powered interrogation tool, goes offline and the five personnel guarding it are feared dead. A team are sent to investigate...

Damn, this was dull... It shouldn't have been dull but somehow, it was exactly that. No urgency at all and a plot that's heavily signposted to the point where I ended up tuning out for the majority and just having it on as background noise. Sometimes, there's a reason why movies are priced at £1.99 on Prime. I'd like to think I've learned my lesson but... ;o)

'The Breach' (2022)

Counting down his last days as the Chief of Police in the tiny town of Lone Crow, John Hawkins must investigate one last case when a mangled body with uncanny wounds washes up on the shores of the Porcupine River.

This is a 'slow burner' but worth persevering with if you like your Mythos nicely understated but creepy at the same time, Maybe it's a little too slow but the mystery is an intriguing one to watch play out and the ending really caught me by surprise. I can chalk up another success for my new Shudder subscription ;o)

  1. I enjoyed Fevre Dream when I read it. But not one I'd ever re-read though.

    1. It's been years since I last read 'Fevre Dream' and from what I can remember... It was ok (I think). I need to give it another go but picking it up was more about filling in a gap in that collection.
