Back on the 'Shudder Subscription Trail'

Well, just about :o) 'Shudder' threw a 'Free Seven Day Trial' at me and it's been a while so I thought I'd jump back on; catch up with a few old favourites and see what was new. A bit of a mixed bag to start out with, lets start with the one that really didn't work first...

 'Ruin Me' (2017)

Alex reluctantly tags along, with her boyfriend, to 'Slasher Sleepout', an extreme event that is part camping trip, part haunted house and part escape room. When the fun turns deadly though, Alex must play the game if she wants to survive...

I'm always up for a little 'Slasher in the Woods' business and 'Ruin Me' started out very strongly with a decent hook and loads of questions being asked, just when you thought you had a handle on it. The final twist though was a major letdown and really made no sense to me. I'm the kind of person who will always try and take the positive out of a film, if I can, but I really couldn't here. I'd avoid 'Ruin Me' if I were you.

'Slaxx' (2020)

When a possessed pair of jeans goes on a killing spree in a clothing store, can an idealistic young saleswoman save the day?

This was a re-watch but it's been a while since I watched it, and I don't think that I ever posted about it here, so in it goes ;o) If you've been reading this blog, you'll know that the madder the concept, the more likely it is that I'll be on board. So possessed denim was a definite re-watch and I'm pleased to confirm that 'Slaxx' was just as funny and gory as it was the last time. There's also a bit of social commentary that grounds the movie and stops it from getting too daft. If you need a laugh, you could do a lot worse than watch 'Slaxx'.

'Black Cab' (2024)

A couple's jovial cab driver diverts them to a remote, haunted road; revealing that this trip is anything but a normal fare...

Now this was more like it. 'Black Cab' is slow to start but then it all starts happening and you realise that 'Black Cab' was just building up a head of steam for a really gripping finale. And I think that the two leads turn in great performances; Nick Frost is chilling as a cabbie with a real tenuous grip on sanity while Synnove Karlsen is superb as Anne, a quiet lady who discovers reserves of strength that she never knew she had.
Highly recommended.

'Last Straw' (2023)

A small town killing spree lands on the doorstep of a rural diner where a lone waitress must fight for her life over the course of the night shift...

I wasn't planning on watching any more movies, last night, but thought I'd give 'Last Straw' a go and I'm really glad that I did. 'Last Straw' is full of action and a twist that I never saw coming, even though I probably should have (it's been a long old week...) It casts the whole movie in a new light and sends it in a completely different direction, just when it was needed. And Jessica Belkin's Nancy pulls off the trick of being thoroughly unlikeable but completely engaging. 'Last Straw' ended up being well worth staying up for.

  1. Just make sure you cancel before the 7 days are up, so you don't get charged for another whole month!

    1. It's only £5 a month so I'm thinking that I might let it run for a couple of months, just until I've watched everything I want to :o)
