Watching Stuff, Not Reading Stuff.
I've got a hospital appointment (another one) this afternoon and I'll be honest, this one has been playing on my mind a fair bit. I'm in a bit of a weird spot you see, the Doctor has said that something isn't quite right, they're just taking a little while to figure out what the issue actually is. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious... :o)
But anyway, you don't really want to know about all that. Lets just say that I couldn't concentrate on any books so I watched a load of telly instead, that worked a lot better for me :o) Let me quickly tell you about the movies I got through...
'The Day of the Triffids' (1963)After an unusual meteor shower leaves most of the human population blind, a merchant navy officer must find a way to conquer tall, aggressive walking plants that feed on people and animals.
If the blurb wasn't enough of a clue, I'll tell you now that this isn't a particularly faithful retelling of the book. Actually, it's not a faithful retelling of the book at all (a few character names to one side) but if you look at the movie as stuff that happened at the same time, as the book, it's surprisingly watchable with some decent practical effects making for some tense moments, which was just what I was after. I don't know if it's a movie that I'd rewatch often but I'm glad I gave it a go.
'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1956)
A small-town doctor learns that the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates.
The 1978 version is probably the better film but this one is my favourite, the other one is a little too bleak even for me. This one though, I love the slow build up of tension and the moment where you realise just how far along the alien invasion already is. And I love the ambiguity of the ending, you're left with the feeling that it really could go either way from that point. This isn't my first rewatch and I still feel like that. You must have seen this movie already but on the off chance that you haven't... Give it a go and thank me later ;o)
'Boy Kills World' (2023)
In a violent dystopian future, a boy is trained by a mysterious shaman to become an instrument of death and take revenge on the regime that killed his parents. Just whose revenge is he enacting though?
When a movie comes out in 2023 and by the beginning of 2025 it's only £2.99 on Prime Video, that's got to set a few alarm bells ringing. The good news here is that while 'Boy Kills World' has a paper thin plot, it makes up for that with a decent plot twist and a hell of a lot of spectacle. And that is what kept me engaged, just over an hour and a half of non-stop excellently choreographed fights. If that's all you're after, 'Boy Kills World' has you covered. If you're after a little more than that though, erm...
What did you watch over the weekend?
I prefer the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers as well. Over the weekend I watched Nosferatu (2024). I loved the cast and the direction, but I thought it was too slow moving.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly the reason I've been staying away from Nosferatu; I might watch it in the future but right now, I need something that's a little more forceful and direct. I'm glad some of it worked for you though :o)
