Some More Movies That I've Watched Recently...
I've been pretty wiped out just recently which has inevitably led to me trawling through my movie watchlists in search of anything that would either hold my attention or at worst, be on in the background while I played on my phone. What? Sometimes it's nice to have a bit of noise in the flat :o)
'The Giant Spider Invasion' (1975)
'Triangle' (2009)
A bit of a mixed bag this time round with a couple of films where I genuinely don't know why I stuck with them the whole way through (I guess I was really tired...) It's not the first film though...
When a black hole strikes North Wisconsin, gigantic spiders emerge, craving human flesh and leaving NASA's top minds with a real problem on their hands.
I don't I ever truly realized what the phrase 'so bad, it's good' really meant until I watched 'The Giant Spider Invasion' the other day. It really isn't good but the movie just says 'fuck it' and leans into it as far as it can go. The result is a lot of fun with the cast lining up to either run away or be eaten by two giant spiders, a motley collection of toy spiders and what must have been a loan from a local tarantula exhibit. It looks ridiculous but the energy is spot on and I had a great time with it.
'Them' (1954)
How can 'Them' have been made 20 years prior to 'The Giant Spider Invasion' and have giant ants that look twice as good? I'm not complaining, just wondering.
There's no plot here, to speak of, but you don't really need one when giant ants are swarming and there's a threat of new nests and humanity's possible extinction? That's all you need (and a little warning note over mans reckless testing of the atomic bomb) to drive things along and it still works, at least it still works for me :o) 'Them' is still a great movie to watch, a real classic as far as I'm concerned.
'Graveyard Shift' (1990)
I love the Stephen King short story (review Here) so I was pretty excited to finally get a chance to watch the movie. It was a real shame then that the movie wasn't that great... It really felt like all the cool storytelling was taken out by people who thought that all was needed was for the cast to line up and be taken out by a creature that you don't see enough of to get a feel for what it is. A bat/rat hybrid apparently, I'll take their word for it.
I'll stick with the short story in future and I'd recommend you do the same. 'Graveyard Shift' was a strangely soul-less affair that I'll have trouble remembering in a week.
'Trick' (2019)
Detective Mike Denver has already killed serial killer Trick; can he kill Trick for good, this time, and stop him coming back every Halloween to kill again...?
See that picture of Trick? He looks pretty awesome doesn't he...? Well, I hate to say it but this is pretty much the only decent thing about the movie. Again, no real plot, just a different 'Halloween Death' for each year with an ending that is sprung on you without any context to back it up. Slasher movies are meant to be fun but 'Trick' left all of that at the door, choosing instead to just its victims up and dispose of them with not even an attempt at an iconic line or a little charisma for the villain.
It's weird that I will put a book down, if it's not working for me, but I will sit through a movie that isn't delivering. I wonder why that is...? Oh well, give 'Trick' a miss as well.
Now this was much more like it.
A group of friends run into trouble when their yacht overturns and the promise of rescue soon becomes a nightmare to repeat itself...
I've been meaning to watch 'Triangle' for ages, just never got round to it, and I'm so glad that I finally (finally) managed to watch it. It's a very simple tale but told to great effect, with an engaging lead that I couldn't help but root for, even when I found out more about her. And that ending... Wow. I could see it coming (because I'm old and jaded) but I still couldn't help but hope for a different outcome and the way it ties everything together is masterful. Highly recommended.
turning the tv on for background noise is one of those urban things. I do it every sunday when Mrs B goes to work in the afternoon and I'm all by myself. So never fear, you're not alone in being alone, hahahahaa :-D
ReplyDeleteI think it's easier to keep a movie going because we can relegate it to an area while we do something else. Much harder to do that with a book, where you have to be focused enough to read it.
I don't live with my kids so I'm finding that I have the TV on more and more in the evenings. I'll also have 'Dawn of the Dead' playing in the background if I'm working on documentation for work. At least I'm not on my own with this ;o)
DeleteI watched Triangle a few years ago and loved it! I agree, masterful ending.
