A 'Did Not Finish'... 'Sea of Souls' - Chris Wraight (Black Library)

You don't often see a 'Did Not Finish' around these parts (there has only been one other this year) because, well... I generally feature books that I've bought myself and given the way things are these days, I'm not going to buy a book unless I'm very certain that I'll finish it ;o)

It does happen though, not often but sometimes, and this time round, it was a book that I really wasn't expecting to put down as early as I did. Go on, have some blurb...

The mighty fleets of the Indomitus Crusade face terrors and dangers beyond imagining. As Guilliman's crusade marches forth, bringing the Emperor's light to thousands of worlds, Fleet Secundus is headed for the darkest dark – the Eye of Terror itself.

Along with warriors of the Adepta Sororitas and the Adeptus Astartes, the Imperial Navy battle cruiser Judgement of the Void pushes deeper into contested space. But as their journey unfolds, the forces of Chaos close in, and a battle for survival is about to begin – one which has ramifications not just for Fleet Secundus, but for the future of the galaxy itself.

Chris Wraight has been a 'must read' author, of mine, for a long time, ever since I first read 'Sword of Justice'. Whether it was the Old World or the Imperium of Man (I've never read any of Wraight's 'Age of Sigmar' books), Wraight just gets the setting and knows exactly what kind of tale to tell within it. Honestly, it's an easy win if I'm stuck for a book to read.

'Sea of Souls' though... It's a tough one to explain but I'll try.

The bottom line is that Wraight does everything right here, void engagements and shipboard politicking just don't resonate with me and these days, I really need a tale to engage me. I'm not doubting the strength of the tale at all, I just clearly needed something else that the book wasn't giving me. And that's all on me, not the book. I want to escape into a book (now more than ever) and I couldn't find the way into 'Sea of Souls'. I might go back to it again, just not for a long time. If you like an 'Imperial Navy' tale though, it could be for you.

What about you? Have you read 'Sea of Souls'?

  1. I'm very particular about the books I read in the 40K universe. More than a whiff of ultramarines and I don't bother.
