Books for the TBR Pile... 'Doctor Who' Edition

I had a doctor's appointment on Thursday and as that particular doctors office lies within walking distance of two of my favourite second hand bookshops... You can guess what happened next. Off I went for a spot of 'I should be working but it's on my way home so why not...' book shopping ;o)

Faction Books has clung on grimly while all the other shops, in the Leegate Centre, gradually closed down around it but you can only stave off the inevitable for so long. One of my favourite haunts (a shop that you'd think was actually made out of books, you couldn't see the walls or the floor...) finally closed down... About three or four days before I arrived at it's padlocked door. This isn't the first time that Faction Books has had to relocate though so I'm hoping that we'll see it pop up again in some form. Fingers crossed ;o)

Halcyon Books though, that was well and truly open for business so I stopped in to see what their sci-fi and fantasy shelves looked like. Not bad as it happens :o) Here's what I came home with,

Turned out to be a great day for shopping at Halcyon Books for this Doctor Who fan, even though I got home to find that I already had a copy of 'Timelash' at home. Oh well, sometimes you have to make quick decisions, in second hand bookshops, and sometimes they're not the right ones. What really struck me though was that I counted four other copies of 'Timelash' and maybe another five or six copies of 'The Sunmakers' on the shelves. My understanding is that the contents of these shelves were from one or two collections which says something, don't you think? Even if it was two collections and each collector had three copies each of 'The Sunmakers', that's one reading copy and two for 'just in case'. I'm interested to see how 'The Sunmakers', in particular, reads :o)

I'm a fine one to talk though... I already have that edition of 'The Broken Sword' but grabbed this copy anyway, just because it felt like a shame to separate it from 'Three Hearts and Three Lions'. I guess book collectors are all a little weird, in a good way of course ;o) I'm reading 'Planet of the Ood' right now but these Doctor Who novelizations are all short enough that I can see myself getting to them sooner rather than later.

And 'A Plague of Demons'? Well, it looked like fun, and I've never read anything by Keith Laumer, so I thought why not? Not sure when I'll get to it but 'shape-shifting dog aliens' sounds like something that I can't go too far wrong with ;o)

How about you? Picked up any good books recently?

  1. Just be aware that Plague of Demons is rather bleak. Not nearly as bad as lot of modern SF/F, but it's no Asimovian "Scyenze will Conquer!" positivism. I hope you enjoy once you eventually work your way around to it :-)

    1. I've got no idea when I'll get to it to be honest. I just saw it and thought I'd have it before someone else did. Thanks for the heads up though, I try not to go too bleak these days unless I'm really in the mood.
