Books for the TBR Pile... 'Back to Fantasy' Edition
A birthday and a day off work, all at the same time... Just what this Graeme needed :o) I pretty much camped out in Waterstones until I found a couple of books that I fancied and I had a little read over some coffee. A little bit of PS4 with my youngest in the evening (and damn, how did she get so good at Fifa...?) and that was one perfect day in the bag :o) Now I just need to get my head round turning fifty next year...
While I do that, and try not to think about work in the morning, have a quick look at the books I found yesterday. And it will be a quick look as I only grabbed a couple. I really want to concentrate on the books that are already on my shelves but, you know... Birthday and all that ;o)
My reading isn't going brilliantly, at the moment, so I thought I'd go back to my roots (as it were) and find some new fantasy to read. Okay, neither of these will be particularly new to you guys but I don't make it into Waterstones all that often so... They're fairly new to me ;o)
'The Blacktongue Thief' was an easy choice. I don't think I've heard a bad word said about it and now I'm a few chapters in, I'm more than inclined to agree with everyone. The plot is a hell of a lot of fun and the worldbuilding is just superb; that's where I am with it right now, I'll try and have something a little more in-depth to say once I finish it ;o) It looks like the prequel, 'The Daughter's War', is worth a look as well, read Alex's review, I'm more than certain I'll be picking it up after I finish 'The Blacktongue Thief'.
And 'The Wolf's Call'? Sometimes, what I really want is a book with an axe wielding bastard on the cover ;o) To be fair, the blurb helped sell it as well,
Vaelin Al Sorna is a living legend. It was his leadership that overthrew empires and his sacrifice that saved the Unified Realm from destruction. Now he lives a quiet life, his days of warfare behind him.
Yet whispers have spread across the sea of an army called the Steel Horde, led by a man who thinks himself a god. When Vaelin learns that Sherin, the woman he lost long ago, has fallen into the Horde's grasp, he resolves to confront this powerful new threat.
To this end, he travels to the realms of the Merchant Kings - a strange land ruled by honour and intrigue. And as the drums of war echo across kingdoms riven by conflict, Vaelin learns that there are some battles even he cannot hope to win.
I've only ever read 'Blood Song' but 'The Wolf's Call' looks like it might be a good place to jump back into the tale of Vaelin Al Sorna. I'll let you know how it turns out.
And that's your lot for this week, at least until I get paid and go a little crazy on Amazon ;o) Anyone here read either 'The Blacktongue Thief' or 'The Wolf's Call'? Leave a comment and let me know what you thought of them.
