Movie Night! 'Pet Sitting' Edition
Only a couple of films to talk about today, mostly because work took up a larger chunk of the day, than normal, but also because I'm doing a spot of pet sitting while my ex-wife is away with my daughters. What's that? Oh yes, one cat and one rabbit; both of whom normally get on but they're both in heat right now and have decided to stay away from each other until all that dies down. Very sensible of them, the cat in particular learned lessons that no cat should ever have to learn...
Anyway. Sorry, had to get that off my chest ;o) This post is meant to be about films so lets talk films! One 'first time viewing' and one 're-watch' coming up...
'Lord of Misrule' (2023)
A priest begins a desperate search when her daughter goes missing during the village harvest festival. Secrets surface and lead to more questions about this seemingly perfect village, the answers lie within the black barn...
Jim Reddy (definitely check out his blog if you haven't already) mentioned that he enjoyed 'Lord of Misrule' and that was all the recommendation I needed to sit down and give it a go myself. And... I really enjoyed it too. There's a 'folk horror' film that looms large over all other 'quaint village with a dark secret' movies; we all know the one. The good news here is that while 'Lord of Misrule' can't help but wear those influences a little too proudly, there's a slight Lovecraftian edge to it that makes it more than just another one of those movies. I'm trying to ration my use of the phrase 'deliciously creepy' but have to use it here because that's just what this movie is, full of atmosphere and tension. And Tuppence Middleton and Ralph Ineson are superb as two avatars of religion fighting it out for the soul of the village; which made the ending all the better from where I was sat.
'World War Z' (2013)
We don't need a blurb here, do we? ;o) The clue is in the title... I was shattered, after work, and needed something that wouldn't require too much of me. 'World War Z' is definitely that kind of movie, very easy to get carried away on a tide of zombies and just go with the flow. One of the drawbacks of this approach is that you find yourself with very little to say after watching it. 'World War Z' looks absolutely amazing but once you scratch beneath the set pieces and the action, there's not actually a lot happening to our players. The movie doesn't ask a lot of them other than that they can avoid being bitten and that's what ultimately makes 'World War Z' a decent movie but not the brilliant one that it wanted to be. Oh well, I've still got the book floating around somewhere.
And that's your lot until I get round to watching a few more movies. Which won't be today, there's far too much that I need to get done. Wish me luck ;o)
Is WWZ in the vein of the Resident Evil movies or more like Romero's "X of the Dead" franchise?
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about this one for the last couple of days... WWZ isn't really Resident Evil but doesn't have enough to say for itself in order to be more like a Romero movie either. The book though, that's more of a Romero thing in terms of what it has to say about humanity and our ability to work together.
DeleteBack to the movie though. It's good fun, not as relentless as a Resident Evil movie but not as cartoonish either. It's a movie that I'll watch maybe every couple of years but it's nowhere near my list of 'Go To' zombie movies. Hope that helps a bit ;o)
Thanks. Probably means I'll not bother with it. I'm not a big zombie fan and a zombie movie need relentless, unstoppable action to keep my interest. Which is what RE did so well :-)
DeleteI glad you liked Lord of Misrule. Nice review!
