Catching up with some TV... Again.
Today is shaping up to be one of those days, I can see it coming on the horizon like a, I don't know... Add your own ominous adjective of choice ;o) It's nothing too major (fingers crossed) but it is going to be one of the days where I have to shut everything else out and get stuff done, hence this post right now. I'm having a little trouble getting my head round writing book posts, at the moment, so now is the best time to catch up on some of the TV I've been into these last few days. And no, I still haven't managed to watch 'The Sword and the Sorcerer' yet, I'm working on it though.
Lets take a quick look at what I have been able to watch then. A couple of familiar shows and a movie that I wasn't planning on checking out but am pretty glad that I did...
'Kill Command' (2016)
Set in the near future, an elite squad of highly trained marines are sent on a not so routine training mission to a remote island, home to advanced military robots that are on a training mission of their own...
The plan was to watch 'She-Hulk' first but I saw 'Kill Command' on the Disney+ homepage and thought, 'why not...?' The film doesn't do anything new at all but I liked how the film's 'near future' approach was reflected in the robots on display. No 'Terminator' style knock offs here, these robots are fairly basic 'guns on caterpillar tracks' and that makes the emergence of the AI robots (for want of a decent phrase) all the more chilling as we realise that there is far more going on, at the facility, than we thought. This approach also makes for some decent fights where the robot's superior firepower is balanced out by the soldier's capacity for independent thought. There are some decent twists and a nicely open-ended finish that could either herald in a sequel or just leave you guessing as to what comes next. Not a bad film all in all, I'm not sure that I'd watch it again but I'm glad I gave it a go. And then, it was onto 'She-Hulk'...
'She-Hulk, Attorney at Law' - Episode 7, 'The Retreat'
Are things finally starting to happen? I think so... But is it too late for me and my interest in this show? I've got a bad feeling about that...
There's a lot to like about this episode, not least of which is that I think we've just been introduced to the superhero team that will rescue Jen when she falls foul of whoever her secret enemy is. Hulking? Hulk King? Either way, Blonsky's clients are the only real superhero team that could appear on 'She-Hulk' and watching Jen accept them (and herself at the same time) makes for another heart-warming episode that I'm glad I watched. I am starting to get tired of being teased for the finale though and yes, that's more about me than the show. There are only two episodes left (I think) so I'm really hoping that stuff actually starts to happen now, please?
'The Rings of Power' – Episode 6, 'Udun'
Adar and his army march on Ostirith...
'The Rings of Power' was another show that looks amazing but was starting to really grate with it's insistence on taking it's own sweet time to go anywhere. Luckily for me... 'Udun' was the episode where everything clicked into place and things started to actually happen. And it was a real joy to watch the plot be given it's head and allowed to go to new places as well as raising new questions. And that finale... It was stunning. I'm not one of those people on Twitter getting all 'scientific' about the odds of an Elf surviving a pyroclastic cloud. I'm that guy who just can't wait to see what happens next and is still trying to work out who Sauron is. Honestly... At this point, you could be Sauron for all I know ;o) I just hope we see him this season.
.Now, lets get today out of the way and we'll see about finding time for 'The Sword and the Sorcerer'...
