'The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter One'

At the end of Season Two of 'The Mandalorian', we saw Boba Fett take out Bib Fortuna and then take the throne held by Fortuna and Jabba the Hutt before him. It's not just any old throne though with whoever is sat on it holding sway over the criminal underworld of Tatooine. To maintain that grip on power though, you've got to do a lot more than just sit on a glorified chair... Can Boba rule the underworld with respect...?

Just as one really cool show finishes on Disney+, another one begins and just in time for us to have something to look forward to after Christmas is over. I've had half an eye open for 'The Book of Boba Fett' for a few months now and it's finally here. Is it any good though? Well, we're talking about a whole show about probably the coolest character in the Star Wars universe (sorry Han but, you know...) so yes, of course it is but at the same time... Look, it's not perfect but there's a lot of potential here for another more than half decent TV show from Disney. Let me tell you a bit about it.

Chapter One is basically the start of two stories. We've got the present and 'what Boba did next' after killing Bib Fortuna. This is a bit of a slow burner with Boba still healing from a few injuries and having to get out and about to meet certain of his new vassals and keep them in line. Boba does get his helmet polished (behave!) but not a lot really happens until 'parkour space ninjas' show up and start laying a beating on Boba. Okay... It all looks good but I couldn't help but wonder why Boba didn't just use his rocket pack and just pick them up from mid-air. I mean seriously, it would have literally been the first thing I did. That's a relatively minor niggle though. We've got all the ingredients required for a plot that should be a good mixture of mystery and action... If it can hurry up a little that is. I'll give it a chance.

And then there's the other story, what happened to Boba after he fell into the Sarlaac Pit? And that's where things fell down a little bit for me. I liked what happened but it felt a little redundant because we already knew that Boba escaped, from the Sarlaac Pit, because he showed up halfway through Season Two of 'The Mandalorian'! Don't get me wrong, it looked cool but felt a little anti-climactic because we're all just waiting for him to get off-world and about his business. Use that time to develop the main plot, not to rehash something that isn't really needed. We'll be getting more of it though so yep, I'll give it a chance for now but I'm really hoping they tie this strand up soon.

Despite these misgivings, I still enjoyed 'Chapter One' and not least because we're dealing with a Boba who isn't invincible any more; he's older now and his body isn't quite up to it anymore. He's Boba Fett though so sheer bloody mindedness will at least get him back to the bacta tank for more healing. I'm up for this, I'm just hoping that the plot picks it's feet up a bit, it could be a very good show if it does.
