Movies that I watched this week...

This week wasn't the best one for reading but was still better than the last couple of weeks. One slim book and a short story is better than no reading at all ;o) In between that and being flat out with work, I did watch a few films as well. Of course I did, my Prime subscription needs to start earning a living! So here are some quick thoughts on what I watched. Some thoughts are much quicker than others as you will see...

'Triassic World' (2018)

Because what better way to let your brain take some time out than to watch an Asylum Movie...

In a top secret laboratory a team of scientists are experimenting with dinosaurs, turning them into perfect creatures in order to use them to grow human organs for transplants. But in doing so, they have made the ferocious creatures indestructible! When the dinosaurs escape their cages the scientists are left fighting for their lives.

The thing about Asylum movies is that as fun as they are, you'll find very quickly that you've seen it all before. Of course you have, they're ripping off something or other. What I saw of 'Triassic World' was fairly standard, a little 'too standard' in fact as I fell asleep for most of the movie... I know how it begins and how it ends, the middle bit though... not a clue. Oh well, the nap did me some good.

'Night of the Living Deb' (2015)

This was a bit of a 'cheat film' as I'd watched it a few years ago and enjoyed it. I was after 'something zombie' though and wondered how 'Night of the Living Deb' had held up since then.

Deb wakes up, after a night out, in the bed of Ryan, the hottest guy in Portland, Maine. An equally shocked but less delighted Ryan gently escorts Deb out of the flat and into a zombie apocalypse. Ryan and Deb must overcome the awkwardness of their one-night stand and stick together if they are to survive.

I'm not saying 'Night of the Living Deb' is better than 'Shaun of the Dead' because it isn't; 'Shaun' is a lot funnier (still makes me laugh today). Where 'Night of the Living Deb' wins out though is that it knows what it wants to be, gentle romantic comedy (with the occasional zombie), and sticks with it. 'Shaun of the Dead' tried to be a bit of everything and lost a little of it's identity as a result. 'Night of the Living Deb' may not have that sense of bleakness, that I enjoy in a zombie movie, then but every now and then, that's not a bad thing. I'm glad I gave it a re-watch.

'Deadheads' (2011)

I love zombie movies and am slowly but surely working my way through them all, even the bad ones (I'm still looking at you 'Hard Rock Zombies' and don't think you've gotten away with it 'Flight of the Living Dead'...) Amazon Prime is a hotbed of all the zombie movies that tried to jump on the bandwagon but got pushed off by the better films. Sometimes it's well deserved but sometimes it feels a little unfair, like with 'Deadheads'...

Two inexplicably coherent zombies awake amidst a zombie attack, and decide to take a road trip to find the one's lost love, unaware they are being chased by the agents of a ruthless company with its own agenda.

'Deadheads' has a little streak of childish humour running through it that might not be for you but for someone like me... It's just the trick ;o) Here's a movie that doesn't really care if the ending (and most of the middle) makes no sense whatsoever; it just wants to have some fun putting our zombie heroes in awkward situations and seeing how they do. And true love will always find a way... erm, apparently... I don't know... I don't know if I'd ever watch 'Deadheads' again but I'm glad I watched it this week, it gave me a few laughs that I really needed.

'Ground Zero' (2010)

Because when I'm in the mood for a zombie movie, I tend to watch loads all at once. Wish I hadn't bothered with this one though...

A clean-up crew is assigned to clean up a gangland execution but no-one ever thought to tell them that one of the bodies would come back to life, hungry...

The concept seemed fair enough but the execution (no pun, seriously) was just tired. The film literally lined up our 'heroes' to be bitten, eaten, or otherwise killed with no attention to any kind of plot (other than cleaning up the bodies). There are plenty of other zombie movies that I'd recommend over this one. I really should do a list...
