'The Mandalorian, Season Two' – Episode 14: 'The Tragedy'
'Mandalorian Monday' is now officially a thing of the past :o( Not only is my blogging schedule trying to readjust in the light of 'Walking Dead: World Beyond' finishing its first season but I didn't realise, until now, that there are only a couple of episodes left in this season of 'The Mandalorian'. I'm not hanging around waiting for Mondays now, not when this season is entering its final phase. And certainly not when things are kicking off like they are in 'The Tragedy'... because they really are.
We'll talk about all that in a minute but before we do, it's time for the customary spoiler warning. This episode has been live for a couple of days now so I'm going to assume you've seen it and be all full of stuff like using the Child's real name, instead of just saying 'The Child' all the time, and saying how great it was to see [You Know Who] back in the game after all that time. You've been warned ;o)
Without further ado then, lets get to it...
On the direction of Ahsoka Tano, Djin Darin has made it to the planet Tython where he hopes that placing Grogu (I told you I'd do it...) on the Seeing Stone will give him a hint of what to do next. It might even summon a Jedi.
Darin and Grogu are about to have visitors as it happens; both unexpected and both about to have a big impact on our heroes...
You know how it is... Just when you think that you're going to get a few episodes of planet hopping/defeat the end of level boss/move on to the next planet, everything just blows up in your face and the whole thing shoots off in a direction that you weren't expecting. Especially if you were me and didn't realise that there are only a couple of episodes left after this one. It's all good though, better than good in fact. 'The Tragedy' is a brilliant episode in its own right and sets things up superbly for the last two installments.
Darin is just starting to allow himself to feel some kind of kinship to Grogu and it is heartbreaking to see that taken away from both of them. I mean, at least for now. It's Disney so it's safe to say that we can make an educated guess about how it will end. In the meantime though, watching Darin try to get Grogu off the stone, while the Imperials are attacking is really powerful stuff and you can see that determination carrying on into the last two episodes.
What's even more powerful though is the return of that iconic Star Wars character Boba Fett. We may never know how he escaped the Saarlac but it almost doesn't matter now; he's here and the showrunners are keen to show that Fett is more the guy who was lethal in the comics and less the guy who just stood around and looked cool in the original films. It works as well. Watching Fett take down squads of Stormtroopers, all by himself, is just poetry in motion and if that wasn't enough, we also get Fennec Shand introducing a little 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' into 'The Mandalorian'. All of a sudden, the planet Tython is playing host to the 'Coolest Bounty Hunters Convention' and it makes for great TV, especially finding out that there is more to Fett now than just getting paid. It means we get more Fett and Shand until the season ends, can't complain about that.
And Moff Gideon is back! Well, we knew that he had to make an appearance sooner or later but the way he makes his entrance is definitely explosive, which is a real shame for the 'Razor Crest'. We still don't know what Gideon's plan is but his smile in the face of Grogu force choking Stormtroopers ('Dark Side Yoda' is still on then...) does exactly what it is meant to, enrage Star Wars fandom and ensure that they're all tuned in next week to see what happens. We all know that there will be at least one more cliffhanger but we'll be there anyway. 'The Tragedy' shakes things up nicely and lets it fly everywhere, now lets see where it all lands.
