'Snatchers' (2019)

It's becoming a bit of a habit... The days are just packed full of stuff at the moment and by the time it's all done, there's not really time for much else other than to watch a movie and go to bed. My TBR pile is looking a little dusty at the moment, I've got the week off work so will have to see if I can do something about that...

In the meantime, tonight was all about watching 'Snatchers', a film that I'd seen covered on 'Carnage Counts' and thought to myself, 'I need to give that a shot...' And once the DVD came through the letterbox, that's exactly what I did :o)

One night stands come with their own set of problems but no-one faced a morning after like Sara's... After a night with her ex-boyfriend, Sara wakes up pregnant, nine months pregnant... The only person she can trust is her ex-best friend, Hayley but a trip to the clinic and one dead doctor later; it's clear that things are even less normal than they already thought. Sara and Hayley need to find out exactly what happened to Sara's ex-boyfriend on his trip to Mexico and then they really need to work out what to do about it. The fate of their town is at stake, possibly even the world...

If there's one thing I love more than a 'creature feature', it's a 'creature feature' that doesn't take itself all that seriously. Luckily for me then, 'Snatchers' proved to be very much the latter of the two; a film that knows exactly what it is and determined to have as much fun as possible seeing what happens next.

'Snatchers' is just this mad mess of gore, teen politics, a little bit of science fiction and horror as well as more gore and a dick joke that I couldn't help but snigger at (although I winced a little as well, he got what he deserved though). You look at all that and can't help but think that it shouldn't work (not all at once in the same film) but it really does, probably because the plot is incredibly simple and has plenty of room for all the crazy stuff to happen. That does mean that there aren't really any big twists or surprises and maybe the film does suffer for that a little; it is very much a 'start at point A and keep going until you hit Z' kind of film. But you know what? That's ok sometimes and 'Snatchers' is so much fun to watch that it really doesn't matter here. There's always something happening and the monsters really tear stuff up when they get going.

It's not just the monsters though, Mary Nepi and Gabrielle Elyse are great value for money as our heroines Sara and Hayley. I love watching actors play it straight when faced with crazy stuff and that is exactly what we get here; it adds an extra edge of comedy to the proceedings and that can never be a bad thing for a film like this.

'Snatchers' was so much fun to watch and the ideal way to end a day full of little stresses. Like I said, it's too simply told to be really engrossing but it does have an alien falling into a blender (amongst other gross out moments) and right now, I wouldn't swap that for anything :o)
