A Book for the TBR Pile: 'Social Distancing' Edition...
So I took myself to Asda today, to do a bit of shopping for some people and oh my goodness... Everyone was keeping to the spirit of social distancing outside the store but when we all got inside... Well, it was everyone for themselves. I tried to keep my distance but it was like people suddenly got blinkered vision and would go through you if you didn't get out of the way. Honestly, by the time I got to the fruit section I was starting to panic a little bit. People just weren't taking it seriously in there and we need to start taking it a bit more seriously otherwise the government is just going to lock us down even more. Oh well, it's nice and quiet back in the flat and I can social distance the whole world from here :o) And talk a bit about books. Shall we...? Go on then.
It's been another really slow week for books which is totally understandable but does make it difficult for me to spin this out into a full length post! I think I'm going to have to come up with a new 'Sunday Post' idea before next week. Amazon screwed up my comic book order, so no 'Avengers' this week, but I did get this instead,
Inquisitor Erasmus Crowl has discovered a terrible plot, its roots firmly planted in the very highest levels of Terra. Pursuing it is fraught with risk, but Crowl’s sense of duty compels him to persevere. He and his acolyte Spinoza run down their leads in secret, knowing that their every move invites danger, but even as they begin to reveal the truth, a greater peril is unfolding in the skies – the Great Rift is becoming manifest. During the madness that threatens to tear Terra asunder, Crowl’s Inquisitorial base of operations comes under attack and is badly ravaged. As his world begins to unravel and a new, bloody age dawns, can Crowl stay true to his course and expose the horror that lies at the heart of the Hollow Mountain?
I read the first book in the series a few months before starting the blog so you won't find a review of that here. I've had half an eye open for book 2 though so when I got paid, I treated myself. Anything written by Chris Wraight is worth your time whether you're a Warhammer 40K fan or just like sci-fi in general. Slightly biased? Maybe but come back and read my review for 'The Hollow Mountain' anyway. In the meantime, have a read of my review for 'Watchers of the Throne' and hopefully you'll see why I'm a bit of a fan.
Actually, while I'm thinking of it... Here's a couple of links to reviews that I posted this week; partly because they're both books that you need to read and also because I'm a teeny tiny bit pleased with how they came out. I'm not the world's best reviewer but with these, the words came out just how I wanted them to :o)
So, I can't say this enough at the moment but I really want you guys to give 'The Perfectly Fine House' a go, it's a ghost story unlike any that you've read before and that's all I really need to say. I think you'll like it. 'Caliban's Hour' is an older book but one that's still worth your time. It fills in gaps that I never even realised could be filled until they were. A re-read really let this book shine and it's only a few pence on Amazon so yeah, get on that one too.
So what's my reading looking like this week? Well, it won't surprise you to learn that I didn't read either of the books that I was planning to, last week, so they're both on the list for this week. I also want to give this book a proper go now, because it's been on my shelf for months...

A shadow has fallen over the Tressian Republic.
Ruling families plot against one another with sharp words and sharper knives, heedless of the threat posed by the invading armies of the Hadari Empire.
The Republic faces its darkest hour. Yet as Tressia falls, heroes rise.
Once I can draw a line between working from home and reading at home (in this strange new world) we'll see how that goes... What are you reading right now?
