'Deadpool Kills Deadpool' – Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin (Marvel)
It's
going to be another short post today and not because of a slight
'post Christmas' hangover... Keep reading and all will become clear.
'Deadpool
Kills Deadpool' is the final part of the 'Deadpool Killogy' where an
alternate universe Deadpool realises that everyone in his universe is
part of a story that they have no control over. What's a Deadpool got
to do in order to tease the writers out of hiding and kill them?
Well, once he's killed every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe
then moved into the Realm of Ideas and killed all your favourite
literary characters there's only one thing to do... Go through every
strand of the Multiverse and kill off the one thing that he hasn't
killed yet, himself...
Luckily
for us, 'our' Deadpool isn't having any of that and neither are a
whole bunch of other Deadpool's that you haven't met yet.
So
yeah, I probably should have written something about 'Deadpool Kills
the Marvel Universe' and 'Deadpool Killustrated' before reviewing
'Deadpool Kills Deadpool'. Sometimes that's just the way the TBR pile
throws em' out and being completely honest, I haven't been great
about reading things in order just recently. Maybe that's a New
Year's Resolution that I need to make for the blog. The bottom line
though is that you don't necessarily have to read the first two books
before you pick up this one. I'd read them anyway (they're good) but
the neat little 'story so far' page, in 'Deadpool Kills Deadpool',
gets you up to speed nicely.
There
is a lot to like about 'Deadpool Kills Deadpool' and if you're a fan
you'll know what I mean. In between moments of clarity, Deadpool does
what he does best, namely kill fools and crack jokes while he does
it. Cullen Bunn is a Deadpool veteran so gets exactly what our 'hero'
is all about, not only that but he reintroduces the Deadpool Corps as
well which was just the best for this long term reader (and I must go
back and review that book sometime...) Not only that but he has a lot
of fun introducing us to a whole Multiverse full of Deadpools. If you
can think of it, Bunn probably writes it and there's a lot of subtle,
and not so subtle, nods to other Marvel heroes and villains. It's
like 'Where's Wally' but everyone is a Deadpool. Salva Espin's art does really well to keep up with all the Deadpools and the increasing demands of Bunn's writing.
The
thing is though, this was only originally a four issue mini-series
and what works well in four bite sized chunks of comic book reading
doesn't work as well when you collect it into a trade. The joke
doesn't stop being funny but it does start to feel really tired about
three quarters of the way in. It's worth sticking with but, at that
point, needed a little more story to balance out the laughs.
'Deadpool
Kills Deadpool' is a fun read where your best bet is to leave it a
little while between re-reads. A little too lightweight to stand up
to constant repeated reads.
