Movie Night! ‘Finally Found A Couple Of Decent Movies To Watch’ Edition…
I spent a large chunk of yesterday trying not to fall asleep at my desk so I didn’t even try to read anything last night, know your limits and all that… ;o)
Nope. I sat down, in the comfy chair, instead and watched a couple of movies; mostly because that was all I was good for but also because I’ve gone through a spell of watching disappointing films, just recently, and I really wanted to break that streak (it had gone on far too long).
And you know what? You can consider the ‘Bad Movie Streak’ well and truly broken :o) A zombie movie is more or less guaranteed to always do that (apart from if it’s ‘Hard Rock Zombies’) but there was still room for another movie that I was pleasantly surprised by. Lets start with the zombie movie.
‘We Bury The Dead’ (2025)
After an experimental EMP weapon is accidentally detonated off the coast of Tasmania, the populace of the island is utterly wiped out and the Australian government mounts a massive clear up operation with volunteers flown in to collect the dead. And then, some of the dead start to get back up… But why?
My ongoing journey, through every single zombie movie I can get my hands on, has seen me wade through an awful lot of, well… awful zombie movies. I should make another list… Anyway :o)
It’s a bit of a treat then come across a zombie movie as powerful, and just plain well made, as ‘We Bury The Dead’. It’s me, I’ll be watching more zombie movies in 2026 but I don’t think I’ll find one as good as this one, just a feeling…
I’ve always said that the best zombie movies are more about humanity than the shambling undead trying to eat it. ‘We Bury The Dead’ runs with that idea and Daisy Ridley gives a superb performance as Ava, trying to get more closure than you initially think. The movie is a series of ‘mini-revelations’ that paint a compelling and heart-breaking picture.
It’s how the movie explores the notion of humanity, in the dead, though that really makes ‘We Bury The Dead’ something special. I won’t spoil it but it’s handled really well and one scene in particular, just wow…
‘A Mother’s Embrace’ (2024)
A young firefighter, and her team, are called out to evacuate a crumbling nursing home, in the face of the worst storm, to hit Rio de Janeiro, in living memory. The staff and residents don’t seem to want to leave though, and then firefighters start disappearing…
I’d never heard of this movie until it popped up on Amazon Prime and I thought I’d give it a go. And… I’m really glad that I did. ‘A Mother’s Embrace’ starts off looking like a ‘haunted house’ movie but moves into ‘cosmic horror’ territory at a ‘slow burn’ pace which builds up the tension nicely. What I really enjoyed though was watching Ana’s past slowly intertwine with what is lurking underneath the nursing home. It casts elements of the opening scenes in a whole new light. Definitely worth the watch.
Two movies watched, two movies that ended up being well worth the time spent with them. Lets see if I can keep that streak going now ;o)
