Movie Night! ‘Nothing brilliant but that’s ok…’ Edition

After my first full week back at work, in a good three months, yesterday was always going to be one of those days where it wasn’t even worth trying to make solid plans; just wing it and anything achieved counts as a win. So that’s exactly what I did, just got through the day (with my kids so not exactly a chore) and rounded things off with a couple of movies before bed ;o)

I’ve tried to focus a little more on reading, just recently, but that was never going to happen yesterday, and I did have a couple of movies in mind. The title, of the post, probably gave the game away but neither movie was that bad to be fair. Not every film has to be a winner (unless you invested in it, of course), so long as they do their job, that’s the main thing. And with that said…

‘The Evil in Us’ (2016)

Run time: 90 mins.

Six friends celebrate July 4th on a small island but by July 5th, only one of them will be left alive after some recreational cocaine has some unexpected side affects…

This was a re-watch and after searching through the blog, I couldn’t find any earlier mention of it so… ‘The Evil in Us’ finally gets its time here ;o)

In the film industry’s ongoing mission to put a little spin on zombie movies, you get movies like ‘The Evil in Us’; a movie that is ‘all zombie’, apart from the actual undead that is. The only problem is that it’s starting to feel like we need real honest to goodness zombies back on our screens again, just to do something about the rash of ‘almost zombie’ movies with various brands of ‘infected/drug crazed cannibals’ filling in for the real thing. Or maybe it’s just that I’m never entirely satisfied. Either way…

‘The Evil in Us’ isn’t a bad movie, quite the opposite in some ways, it’s just that you watch it and realise that it’s not particularly original. There are a couple of little twists, one of which really worked for me, but overall, nothing that really made the movie stand out from any number of other movies doing exactly the same thing.

What made me stick with this re-watch then? Everyone involved in the movie throws everything they have at it, that’s basically it. You won’t necessarily find anything new here but the energy is vicious and the director pulls no punches with what is inflicted on our six leads. That’s all I needed really and though you can set your watch by the jump-scares, ‘The Evil in Us’ is very easy to get into and stick with.

‘Coyotes’ (2025)

Run time: 91 mins.

Trapped in their Hollywood Hills home, a family must fight for survival when caught between a raging fire and a pack of savage coyotes…

Now here’s a movie that I’d been planning on watching for a long time… And then promptly forgot about (I’m getting old). I caught sight of it, on Prime, though and sat down for a watch last night. And… It’s a bit of a mixed bag to be honest. When ‘Coyotes’ sticks to the horror and suspense, it has a lot going for it with some well worked ‘coyote kills’ and some wickedly tense moments leading up to these. The humour is a little ‘hit and miss’ but I’ll give the movie the benefit of the doubt here as not every joke lands for everyone. When ‘Coyotes’ has something to say about ‘family’ though… That’s where the movie lost its way a little, at least from where I was sat. It just felt like the ending didn’t quite pay off all the work that had gone into the lead-up. Again, not a bad movie though, I’m just hoping there’s an alternate ending somewhere… ;o)

  1. Unless those coyotes were hopped up on that crazy coke from the previous movie, they just don't act like that. Wolves, yes, coyotes, not so much. Sometimes I wonder how hollywood types would function if you dropped them in real farm land and just let them try to survive. Coyotes are scavengers, for goodness sake. But even in a life and death situation, you kill 1 or 2 of them and the rest will get scared and run off.
Sorry, didn't mean to piss all over your movie post. It's just sometimes I get rather upset at the absolute ignorance displayed by movie types.
